88 of families led by John Adair Bell immigrated to Texas and

1010 the community came to be known as Mount Tabor after the name of
1111 the plantation that Mr. Bell established in Rusk County; during
1212 the Civil War, the Mount Tabor community swelled with an influx
1313 of Cherokee who were supportive of the Confederacy and who were
1414 fleeing the fighting in Indian Territory; among their number were
1515 the wife and children of Confederate general Stand Watie;
1616 following the end of the war, residents of Mount Tabor began to

2525 Penn Adair; in addition to John Adair Bell and William Penn
2626 Adair, notable leaders of the community have included Chief
2727 Chicken Trotter, also known as Devereaux Jarrett Bell, who signed
2828 the 1843 Treaty of Birds Fort on behalf of the Cherokee, and, in
2929 the 20th century, chairs of the Texas Cherokees and Associated
3030 Bands W. W. Keeler, who served as principal chief of the Cherokee
3131 Nation and as chief executive officer of Phillips Petroleum
3232 Company, and Foster T. Bean, who served as mayor of Kilgore for
3333 more than 20 years; and
3434 WHEREAS, The original settlers of Mount Tabor and their
3535 descendants have contributed in myriad ways to their communities,
3636 their state, and their nation; they have worn the uniform of every
3737 branch of this country's armed forces and taken part in every
3838 conflict from the Civil War to Iraq and Afghanistan; in civilian

4040 judges to ministers and school teachers; and
4141 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Texas has drawn strength
4242 from the great diversity of its people and cultures, and it is a
