11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 398
22 WHEREAS, On September 26, 2014, forty-three college students
33 from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Normal School in Ayotzinapa,
44 Guerrero, Mexico, disappeared in Iguala, Mexico; and
55 WHEREAS, The Ayotzinapa students were mostly teenagers and
66 young men from poor, rural, campesino families who were training
77 to become rural teachers and serve the indigenous and
88 disadvantaged in their community; and
99 WHEREAS, It has been estimated that 25,000 to 26,000 people
1010 have disappeared in Mexico since 2006, and those who disappear
1111 often include the very vulnerable, such as the poor, migrants,
1212 women, and children; and
1313 WHEREAS, There has been an international outcry regarding
1414 the missing students in Mexico from, among others, the United
1515 Nations, the Parliament of the United Kingdom, the European
1616 Parliament, and the international human rights community; and
1717 WHEREAS, Parents of the Ayotzinapa students are visiting
1818 Austin on March 18, 19, and 20, 2015, as part of the Caravana 43
1919 and will also visit several other cities in the United States; and
2020 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas adds its voice
2121 to those in the international community who are deeply
2222 concerned about the missing college students from Mexico;
2323 now, therefore, be it
2424 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
2525 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the grieving
2626 families of the missing students from Ayotzinapa; and, be it
2727 further
2828 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2929 the families of those students as an expression of deepest
3030 sympathy from the Texas Senate.
