11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 400
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Charles J. Barnett for his distinguished career in
44 health care leadership and for his numerous professional
55 achievements; and
66 WHEREAS, Charles Barnett is a Fellow of the American
77 College of Healthcare Executives and a beloved Austin resident;
88 he recently stepped down as executive chairman of the board of
99 Seton Healthcare Family after having served for many years as the
1010 organization's president and chief executive officer; and
1111 WHEREAS, Under Mr. Barnett's leadership the Seton Healthcare
1212 Family grew from a $200 million to a $2 billion organization; in
1313 addition, the organization championed fund-raising for the
1414 construction of Dell Children's Medical Center and led the
1515 development of a protocol for delivering babies that significantly
1616 reduced birth-trauma events, for which Seton earned the Ernest
1717 Amory Codman Award; and
1818 WHEREAS, In 2009, Mr. Barnett was named Austinite of the
1919 Year for his role in negotiating the relationship between Seton
2020 and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School; this
2121 ultimately enabled the university system to launch its new
2222 medical school in Austin; and
2323 WHEREAS, His professional successes have gained recognition
2424 on the local and national levels; he was named the 2013 Legacy
2525 Award Winner for Best Chief Executive Officer by the Austin
2626 Business Journal, and in 2005, he was the recipient of the
2727 Distinguished Service Award from the American Heart Association
2828 for his leadership during the influx of patients in the aftermath
2929 of Hurricane Rita; and
3030 WHEREAS, Mr. Barnett stepped down from his leadership role
3131 at Seton on February 13, 2015, and he began a new chapter in his
3232 career with Cognitive Scale, a cloud technology company, where he
3333 is helping to develop innovative health care products; he will be
3434 missed at the Seton Healthcare Family, but his leadership has
3535 left a lasting imprint that will benefit the system for years to
3636 come; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3838 Legislature, hereby commend Charles J. Barnett for his
3939 outstanding accomplishments in the field of health care and his
4040 invaluable contributions to the Seton Healthcare Family and
4141 extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4343 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
