2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize Charles J. Barnett for his distinguished career in |
---|
4 | 4 | | health care leadership and for his numerous professional |
---|
5 | 5 | | achievements; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Charles Barnett is a Fellow of the American |
---|
7 | 7 | | College of Healthcare Executives and a beloved Austin resident; |
---|
8 | 8 | | he recently stepped down as executive chairman of the board of |
---|
9 | 9 | | Seton Healthcare Family after having served for many years as the |
---|
10 | 10 | | organization's president and chief executive officer; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Under Mr. Barnett's leadership the Seton Healthcare |
---|
12 | 12 | | Family grew from a $200 million to a $2 billion organization; in |
---|
13 | 13 | | addition, the organization championed fund-raising for the |
---|
14 | 14 | | construction of Dell Children's Medical Center and led the |
---|
15 | 15 | | development of a protocol for delivering babies that significantly |
---|
16 | 16 | | reduced birth-trauma events, for which Seton earned the Ernest |
---|
17 | 17 | | Amory Codman Award; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In 2009, Mr. Barnett was named Austinite of the |
---|
19 | 19 | | Year for his role in negotiating the relationship between Seton |
---|
20 | 20 | | and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School; this |
---|
21 | 21 | | ultimately enabled the university system to launch its new |
---|
22 | 22 | | medical school in Austin; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, His professional successes have gained recognition |
---|
24 | 24 | | on the local and national levels; he was named the 2013 Legacy |
---|
25 | 25 | | Award Winner for Best Chief Executive Officer by the Austin |
---|
26 | 26 | | Business Journal, and in 2005, he was the recipient of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Distinguished Service Award from the American Heart Association |
---|
28 | 28 | | for his leadership during the influx of patients in the aftermath |
---|
29 | 29 | | of Hurricane Rita; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Barnett stepped down from his leadership role |
---|
31 | 31 | | at Seton on February 13, 2015, and he began a new chapter in his |
---|
32 | 32 | | career with Cognitive Scale, a cloud technology company, where he |
---|
33 | 33 | | is helping to develop innovative health care products; he will be |
---|
34 | 34 | | missed at the Seton Healthcare Family, but his leadership has |
---|
35 | 35 | | left a lasting imprint that will benefit the system for years to |
---|
36 | 36 | | come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby commend Charles J. Barnett for his |
---|
39 | 39 | | outstanding accomplishments in the field of health care and his |
---|
40 | 40 | | invaluable contributions to the Seton Healthcare Family and |
---|
41 | 41 | | extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
43 | 43 | | him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
