2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Businesses that employ Texans and that contribute |

3 | 3 | | to the local economy are important components of a prosperous |
---|
4 | 4 | | future, and Slone Lumber Company, Incorporated, is among such |
---|
5 | 5 | | notable enterprises; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, In November 1962, H. A. "Lindy" Slone and his |
---|
7 | 7 | | wife, Ola Mae, founded Slone Lumber Company shortly after moving |
---|
8 | 8 | | to Alta Loma, a community that was eventually annexed by the City |
---|
9 | 9 | | of Santa Fe; the business sold items ranging from lumber and |
---|
10 | 10 | | nails to plumbing and electrical tools; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The Slones incorporated the operation in 1964 and |
---|
12 | 12 | | included their son, Adonn Slone, and daughter, Linda Sue Inman, as |
---|
13 | 13 | | shareholders; the company continued to thrive through the able |
---|
14 | 14 | | leadership of the family's second and third generations, with Adonn |
---|
15 | 15 | | Slone becoming president in 1988 and the founders' grandson, Gregg |
---|
16 | 16 | | Slone, taking the helm in 2006; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, While managing the needs of the business, |
---|
18 | 18 | | members of the Slone family have been active in their churches |
---|
19 | 19 | | and community; in addition to volunteering in the Lions Club |
---|
20 | 20 | | and supporting organizations like the local volunteer fire |
---|
21 | 21 | | department, Lindy Slone was among the charter members of the |
---|
22 | 22 | | Alta Loma Merchants Association, which grew into what is now |
---|
23 | 23 | | the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce; in January 2015, the chamber |
---|
24 | 24 | | recognized Slone Lumber and the Slone family with a special |
---|
25 | 25 | | award for their more than 50 years of service to the chamber |
---|
26 | 26 | | and city at large; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, This tradition of community service was carried |
---|
28 | 28 | | on by Adonn Slone, who once led the Santa Fe Chamber of |
---|
29 | 29 | | Commerce as president, served on the City of Santa Fe Planning |
---|
30 | 30 | | and Zoning Board, and was a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight; |
---|
31 | 31 | | Gregg Slone has been a coach and promoter of youth sports, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | he partners with the nationwide organization Operation |
---|
33 | 33 | | Finally Home to supply materials for building new homes for |
---|
34 | 34 | | veterans with disabilities; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Slone Lumber was sold to a national company in |
---|
36 | 36 | | June 2014, but Gregg Slone remains general manager, and the local |
---|
37 | 37 | | workforce of approximately 50 employees continues with the |
---|
38 | 38 | | business; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Over the last half-century, members of the Slone |
---|
40 | 40 | | family have made immeasurable contributions to the life and |
---|
41 | 41 | | development of their community, and they may take special pride |
---|
42 | 42 | | in their achievements; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature, hereby honor the Slone family for their |
---|
45 | 45 | | outstanding entrepreneurship and civic engagement and extend |
---|
46 | 46 | | to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
48 | 48 | | prepared for the Slone family as an expression of high regard |
---|
49 | 49 | | from the Texas Senate. |
