11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 409
22 WHEREAS, Businesses that employ Texans and that contribute
33 to the local economy are important components of a prosperous
44 future, and Slone Lumber Company, Incorporated, is among such
55 notable enterprises; and
66 WHEREAS, In November 1962, H. A. "Lindy" Slone and his
77 wife, Ola Mae, founded Slone Lumber Company shortly after moving
88 to Alta Loma, a community that was eventually annexed by the City
99 of Santa Fe; the business sold items ranging from lumber and
1010 nails to plumbing and electrical tools; and
1111 WHEREAS, The Slones incorporated the operation in 1964 and
1212 included their son, Adonn Slone, and daughter, Linda Sue Inman, as
1313 shareholders; the company continued to thrive through the able
1414 leadership of the family's second and third generations, with Adonn
1515 Slone becoming president in 1988 and the founders' grandson, Gregg
1616 Slone, taking the helm in 2006; and
1717 WHEREAS, While managing the needs of the business,
1818 members of the Slone family have been active in their churches
1919 and community; in addition to volunteering in the Lions Club
2020 and supporting organizations like the local volunteer fire
2121 department, Lindy Slone was among the charter members of the
2222 Alta Loma Merchants Association, which grew into what is now
2323 the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce; in January 2015, the chamber
2424 recognized Slone Lumber and the Slone family with a special
2525 award for their more than 50 years of service to the chamber
2626 and city at large; and
2727 WHEREAS, This tradition of community service was carried
2828 on by Adonn Slone, who once led the Santa Fe Chamber of
2929 Commerce as president, served on the City of Santa Fe Planning
3030 and Zoning Board, and was a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight;
3131 Gregg Slone has been a coach and promoter of youth sports, and
3232 he partners with the nationwide organization Operation
3333 Finally Home to supply materials for building new homes for
3434 veterans with disabilities; and
3535 WHEREAS, Slone Lumber was sold to a national company in
3636 June 2014, but Gregg Slone remains general manager, and the local
3737 workforce of approximately 50 employees continues with the
3838 business; and
3939 WHEREAS, Over the last half-century, members of the Slone
4040 family have made immeasurable contributions to the life and
4141 development of their community, and they may take special pride
4242 in their achievements; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4444 Legislature, hereby honor the Slone family for their
4545 outstanding entrepreneurship and civic engagement and extend
4646 to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4848 prepared for the Slone family as an expression of high regard
4949 from the Texas Senate.
