| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens |

| 6 | 6 | | across the state in mourning the loss of Kent Finlay, who died |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | March 2, 2015, at the age of 77; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A legendary and beloved Texas songwriter and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | musical mentor, Kent Finlay helped spark the careers of famed |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | musicians across multiple genres, and he is well known for |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | bringing the essence of Texas honky-tonk to the world; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In October of 1974, he opened the renowned |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Cheatham Street Warehouse, a rustic music venue in San Marcos, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and for more than 40 years, countless Texas greats such as Stevie |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Ray Vaughan and Eric Johnson honed their talents on the Cheatham |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | stage; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Finlay is perhaps best known for hosting |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | George Strait's first stage performance with the Ace in the Hole |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Band in 1975 and for driving the then unknown country music icon |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | to Nashville to record his first demo tapes; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Kent Finlay's own musical narratives, including |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | "They Call It the Hill Country," showcase his unique talent at |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | song crafting, which he readily shared with the songwriters he |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | consistently championed; he also cowrote a number of album tracks |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | with several of the talented musicians he helped promote; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Kent Finlay was a proud father and grandfather, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and he was known for his warmhearted and generous nature; he will |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | be fondly remembered by loved ones and fans across the state and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | nation; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | family of Kent Finlay; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 34 | 34 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
