| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Such transplants are made possible by organ |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | donations from deceased and living persons, a noble act that |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | gives multitudes of recipients a second chance at life; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas registry, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | created by the Texas Senate and Texas House of Representatives in |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 2005, provides a method for willing donors to record legal consent |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | for organ, eye, and tissue donation, thereby lifting the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | decision-making burden from families at the time of a loved one's |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | death; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, More than seven million Texans have joined the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | registry to date, thanks in part to partnerships forged with the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Transportation that enable citizens to sign up during the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | driver's license, ID, and vehicle registration processes; |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | gratitude for this endeavor is also owed to the tireless public |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | education efforts of the donation community and their passionate |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | volunteers in Texas; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, While the Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | registry is a notable step, more work remains to be done to ensure |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | that the wishes of every potential donor are carried out; the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | wait for a lifesaving organ transplant continues for more than |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | 123,000 people nationwide, 21 of whom are expected to die before |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | this day is over; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Individuals representing the Texas Transplantation |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Society and the Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas registry are united |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | in their mission to educate Texans about the critical and rising |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | need for donors, the transformative impact of donation, and the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | simple steps that can be taken to register; in 2014, 739 people |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | became organ donors in Texas, resulting in successful transplant |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | operations for 2,600 patients; and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, The choice of registering as an organ donor is one |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | that can provide hope beyond measure to men, women, and children in |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | need, and those who have committed to the goal of promoting and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | facilitating donations truly merit special commendation; now, |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | therefore, be it |

| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 23, 2015, as Donate Life |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Texas Day at the State Capitol, pay tribute to transplant donors |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | and their families, and encourage all Texans to consider giving |
