11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 414
22 WHEREAS, Through medical expertise and advances in organ
33 and tissue transplants, more lives are being saved, improved, and
44 prolonged than ever before; and
55 WHEREAS, Such transplants are made possible by organ
66 donations from deceased and living persons, a noble act that
77 gives multitudes of recipients a second chance at life; and
88 WHEREAS, The Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas registry,
99 created by the Texas Senate and Texas House of Representatives in
1010 2005, provides a method for willing donors to record legal consent
1111 for organ, eye, and tissue donation, thereby lifting the
1212 decision-making burden from families at the time of a loved one's
1313 death; and
1414 WHEREAS, More than seven million Texans have joined the
1515 registry to date, thanks in part to partnerships forged with the
1616 Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of
1717 Transportation that enable citizens to sign up during the
1818 driver's license, ID, and vehicle registration processes;
1919 gratitude for this endeavor is also owed to the tireless public
2020 education efforts of the donation community and their passionate
2121 volunteers in Texas; and
2222 WHEREAS, While the Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas
2323 registry is a notable step, more work remains to be done to ensure
2424 that the wishes of every potential donor are carried out; the
2525 wait for a lifesaving organ transplant continues for more than
2626 123,000 people nationwide, 21 of whom are expected to die before
2727 this day is over; and
2828 WHEREAS, Individuals representing the Texas Transplantation
2929 Society and the Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas registry are united
3030 in their mission to educate Texans about the critical and rising
3131 need for donors, the transformative impact of donation, and the
3232 simple steps that can be taken to register; in 2014, 739 people
3333 became organ donors in Texas, resulting in successful transplant
3434 operations for 2,600 patients; and
3535 WHEREAS, The choice of registering as an organ donor is one
3636 that can provide hope beyond measure to men, women, and children in
3737 need, and those who have committed to the goal of promoting and
3838 facilitating donations truly merit special commendation; now,
3939 therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4141 Legislature, hereby recognize March 23, 2015, as Donate Life
4242 Texas Day at the State Capitol, pay tribute to transplant donors
4343 and their families, and encourage all Texans to consider giving
4444 the gift of life through organ donation.
