2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize educator, activist, and community leader Jewell |
---|
4 | 4 | | Christine White Kyker on the occasion of her 90th birthday; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Chris Kyker was born March 30, 1925; she grew up |
---|
6 | 6 | | in Lubbock and attended Abilene Christian University where she |
---|
7 | 7 | | earned multiple degrees; she went on to serve as speech and |
---|
8 | 8 | | theater director at her alma mater, which has honored her with |
---|
9 | 9 | | its Outstanding Alumnus Award; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, She married Rex Paxton Kyker in 1946, and they |
---|
11 | 11 | | were blessed with five children and in time with grandchildren; |
---|
12 | 12 | | she instilled in them the importance of education and public |
---|
13 | 13 | | service, and they collectively hold dozens of college degrees and |
---|
14 | 14 | | are involved in leadership roles with many community |
---|
15 | 15 | | organizations and boards; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Kyker has been an active and effective |
---|
17 | 17 | | advocate on issues related to mental health and aging for many |
---|
18 | 18 | | years, and she has received numerous awards and honors for her |
---|
19 | 19 | | work; she was the founding president and chief executive officer |
---|
20 | 20 | | of Disability Resources, Incorporated, and the founding director |
---|
21 | 21 | | of the West Central Texas Area Agency on Aging; Governor Bill |
---|
22 | 22 | | Clements named her as the first executive director of the Texas |
---|
23 | 23 | | Department on Aging, and she served as a delegate to the 2005 |
---|
24 | 24 | | White House Conference on Aging and as the Texas state |
---|
25 | 25 | | coordinator for the conference in 1981; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Kyker has been a leader in the Texas |
---|
27 | 27 | | Silver-HairedLegislature;sheservedasitsspeakerand |
---|
28 | 28 | | as treasurer of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature Foundation, |
---|
29 | 29 | | and in 2007, Governor Rick Perry presented her with the |
---|
30 | 30 | | Governor's Lifetime Achievement Award for her work with the |
---|
31 | 31 | | organization; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, A beloved and respected citizen of our state, she |
---|
33 | 33 | | is noted for her wisdom and her wise counsel, and her enthusiasm |
---|
34 | 34 | | for living each day to the fullest is an inspiration to all those |
---|
35 | 35 | | who know her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature, hereby commend Jewell Christine White Kyker on her |
---|
38 | 38 | | commitment to public service and her many contributions to our |
---|
39 | 39 | | state and extend to her best wishes for a memorable 90th birthday |
---|
40 | 40 | | celebration; and, be it further |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
