SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 423
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Sister Carolyn Kosub, Sister Emily Jocson, and Sister
Fatima Santiago, Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of
Mary, who have been named the recipients of Catholic Extension's
2014 Lumen Christi Award; and
WHEREAS, This prestigious honor is bestowed by Catholic
Extension to priests, women religious, or laypersons working in
America's mission dioceses who have devoted their lives to
serving the poor in the nation's most underprivileged areas; and
WHEREAS, For more than a decade, Sister Kosub, Sister
Jocson, and Sister Santiago have served the people of the Pueblo
de Palmas colonia near Peñitas; and
WHEREAS, Their work has included the 2004 creation of
Proyecto Desarrollo Humano, an outreach center dedicated to
health, social services, education, and evangelization; the
center provides the colonia's residents with such facilities as
classroom space, a computer lab, and a medical and dental
clinic; and
WHEREAS, In 2009, these dedicated women secured donations
and supervised the construction of Saint Ann Church, which became
home to the newest parish in the Diocese of Brownsville; their
compassion, their strength, and their enthusiasm for helping
others is truly an inspiration to all; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
Legislature, hereby commend Sister Carolyn Kosub, Sister Emily
Jocson, and Sister Fatima Santiago of the Missionary Sisters of
the Immaculate Heart of Mary on their dedication to serving the
poor and transforming lives in one of the most marginalized areas
of Texas and extend congratulations to them on being selected by
Catholic Extension for a Lumen Christi Award; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
them as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
