| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Citizens and business leaders of Montgomery County |

| 3 | 3 | | are gathering in Austin on March 24, 2015, to celebrate |

| 4 | 4 | | Montgomery County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated at the southern edge of the Piney Woods |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | of East Texas, Montgomery County was established by the Congress |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | of the Republic of Texas in 1837; the county is officially |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | acknowledged as the Birthplace of the Lone Star Flag because the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | design presented by resident Dr. Charles B. Stewart was adopted |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | by the Texas Congress in 1839 and has remained the banner of the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | state since it joined the Union in 1845; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the railroads in the 1870s and 1880s |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | sparked a lumber boom that revived Montgomery County's |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | agricultural economy after the Civil War; Houston lumberman |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Isaac Conroe established a sawmill at a railroad junction near |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Stewarts Creek in 1881, and the town of Conroe that grew up around |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the mill became the largest town in the county and was named the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | county seat in 1889; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1931, the discovery of oil triggered yet another |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | financial upsurge in the area, and today, oil production, the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | lumber industry, and ranching further the county's prosperity; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | visitors from across the state are drawn to the region's vibrant |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | historical and cultural establishments, and outdoor enthusiasts |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | enjoy the recreational opportunities at Sam Houston National |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Forest, W. Goodrich Jones State Forest, and Lake Conroe Park; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | additionally, The Woodlands, a master-planned community, is home |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, a major concert venue as |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | well as the summer residence of the Houston Symphony; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, This visit to the State Capitol was organized by |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the Conroe/Lake Conroe, Woodlands Area, Magnolia Parkway, Magnolia, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | East Montgomery, and Montgomery Area Chambers of Commerce; |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | members of each association work to improve and strengthen economic |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | development and the quality of life throughout Montgomery County, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | which, with a current population of approximately half a million |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | people, is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation; and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich past as they look forward |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | to a bright future, the residents of Montgomery County may take |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | great pride in their continuing contributions to the history and |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | heritage of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 24, 2015, as Montgomery County |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |

| 43 | 43 | | sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin. |
