| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Collegiate and alumnae members of the Delta |

| 3 | 3 | | Sigma Theta Sorority are gathering in Austin on April 7, 2015, |

| 4 | 4 | | to mark Red and White Day, a day of advocacy and action, at the |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was initiated in |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 1913 at Howard University in Washington, D.C.; the 22 original |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | members included four young women from Texas, Zephyr Chisom |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Carter, Jessie McGuire Dent, Frederica Chase Dodd, and Myra Davis |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Hemmings, all committed to academic excellence and social |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | change; members marched in a women's suffrage parade soon after, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and they incorporated as a national organization in 1930; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Since its founding, more than 200,000 women have |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | joined Delta Sigma Theta in the United States and several foreign |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | countries; the sorority encompasses about 1,000 chapters, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | including many in the Lone Star State; members work toward |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | positive change in their communities and advocate for economic |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | development, international awareness, physical and mental |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | health, and improved education; moreover, they mentor at-risk |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | African American girls, conduct voter awareness drives, host |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | political forums, and help guide and inform public policy; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The women of Delta Sigma Theta have enriched the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | State of Texas and the nation with their generosity and their wide |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | array of programs and services, and it is indeed a pleasure to |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | commend them for their noteworthy endeavors; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 7, 2015, as Red and White Day |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | at the State Capitol and extend to all those involved with the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sincere best wishes for the future; |
