| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Harlingen in recognizing April 4, 2015, as |

| 4 | 4 | | Harlingen Area Autism Awareness Day; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Persons with autism and autism spectrum disorder |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | typically have varying levels of difficulty in social |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | interaction and verbal and nonverbal communication and manifest |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | repetitive behaviors; both are disorders in brain development |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | that can affect any individual, regardless of race, religion, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | socioeconomic status, or geography; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, One in 68 children in the nation are diagnosed |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | with autism, and this incidence is significantly higher than 10 |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | years ago; Texas has more than 96,000 children living with a form |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | of autism spectrum disorder, the second largest population of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | children in the United States diagnosed with the spectrum; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, There is no known single cause for autism, yet |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | early diagnosis and intervention are paramount to effective |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | treatment and can dramatically improve outcomes; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Harlingen Area Autism Awareness Day is being |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | celebrated in conjunction with Autism Awareness Month and is an |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | opportunity to inform the general public about autism and to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | celebrate the unique talents and qualities of individuals who |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | live with the autism spectrum disorder; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the citizens of Harlingen and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the surrounding area for their efforts to raise awareness of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | autism and autism spectrum disorder and extend to them best |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | wishes for a successful Harlingen Area Autism Awareness Day; |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | and, be it further |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a |
