| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church |

| 3 | 3 | | in Houston are celebrating the 89th anniversary of the church's |

| 4 | 4 | | founding on May 24, 2015; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Calvary Missionary Baptist Church was established |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | on May 16, 1926, by the Reverend C. H. Miles Sr. and 11 founding |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | members from Houston's historic Independence Heights neighborhood; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the first church facility was constructed later that year on East |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 40-1/2 Street, and generations of worshippers attended services |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | there until 2008, when the building was damaged by Hurricane Ike; |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the church was then relocated to its current home on McGallion |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Road, where it remains an integral part of the local community; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The church has surmounted numerous challenges |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | over the course of its long history, and its congregants have |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | benefited from the able leadership of many dedicated clergymen, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | including the Reverend Shannon T. Oliver, who leads the church |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | today; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, For nearly nine decades, Calvary Missionary Baptist |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Church has served as a source of inspiration and guidance to many |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Houston residents, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | church at this special time in its history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 89th anniversary of Calvary |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Missionary Baptist Church and extend to its clergy and congregation |

| 25 | 25 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
