11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 477
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the 19th Annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice, which
44 is taking place March 28, 2015, in San Antonio; and
55 WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was one of the foremost labor and
66 civil rights leaders in American history; born March 31, 1927, he
77 grew up laboring as a migrant farm worker in the fields and
88 vineyards of the southwestern United States, where he was exposed
99 to the injustices and hardships common to that life; and
1010 WHEREAS, After serving in the United States Navy, he began
1111 his career as a civil rights activist when he joined the
1212 Community Service Organization, a Latino civil rights group; as a
1313 member of the organization, he conducted voter registration
1414 drives and campaigns against racial and economic discrimination,
1515 and he rose to the position of national director before acting on
1616 his dream to establish an organization to protect the rights of
1717 farm workers; and
1818 WHEREAS, In 1962, Mr. Chavez created the National Farm
1919 Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers
2020 of America, the first successful farm workers' union in the
2121 nation's history; Cesar Chavez was deeply committed to the
2222 principle of nonviolence; under his leadership, the union was
2323 able to achieve fair wages and benefits and humane living
2424 conditions for farm workers; and
2525 WHEREAS, The union organized successful strikes and
2626 boycotts that led to the first industry-wide labor contracts for
2727 farm workers and to the passage of the landmark 1975 California
2828 Agricultural Labor Relations Act, which is still the nation's
2929 only law that protects the right of farm workers to unionize; and
3030 WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was the quintessential American
3131 hero; he rose from poverty and hardship to become an inspiration
3232 to men and women around the world; it is truly fitting that we
3333 continue to celebrate his commitment to social justice and his
3434 enduring contributions to working men and women everywhere; now,
3535 therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3737 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of Cesar
3838 Chavez and extend best wishes to all those associated with the
3939 19th Annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4141 honor of this special occasion.
