1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 477
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize the 19th Annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice, which
4	4	is taking place March 28, 2015, in San Antonio; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was one of the foremost labor and
6	6	civil rights leaders in American history; born March 31, 1927, he
7	7	grew up laboring as a migrant farm worker in the fields and
8	8	vineyards of the southwestern United States, where he was exposed
9	9	to the injustices and hardships common to that life; and
10	10	WHEREAS, After serving in the United States Navy, he began
11	11	his career as a civil rights activist when he joined the
12	12	Community Service Organization, a Latino civil rights group; as a
13	13	member of the organization, he conducted voter registration
14	14	drives and campaigns against racial and economic discrimination,
15	15	and he rose to the position of national director before acting on
16	16	his dream to establish an organization to protect the rights of
17	17	farm workers; and
18	18	WHEREAS, In 1962, Mr. Chavez created the National Farm
19	19	Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers
20	20	of America, the first successful farm workers' union in the
21	21	nation's history; Cesar Chavez was deeply committed to the
22	22	principle of nonviolence; under his leadership, the union was
23	23	able to achieve fair wages and benefits and humane living
24	24	conditions for farm workers; and
25	25	WHEREAS, The union organized successful strikes and
26	26	boycotts that led to the first industry-wide labor contracts for
27	27	farm workers and to the passage of the landmark 1975 California
28	28	Agricultural Labor Relations Act, which is still the nation's
29	29	only law that protects the right of farm workers to unionize; and
30	30	WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was the quintessential American
31	31	hero; he rose from poverty and hardship to become an inspiration
32	32	to men and women around the world; it is truly fitting that we
33	33	continue to celebrate his commitment to social justice and his
34	34	enduring contributions to working men and women everywhere; now,
35	35	therefore, be it
36	36	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
37	37	Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of Cesar
38	38	Chavez and extend best wishes to all those associated with the
39	39	19th Annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice; and, be it further
40	40	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
41	41	honor of this special occasion.
