11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 486
22 WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association
33 are gathering at the State Capitol to celebrate Texas Retired
44 Teachers Association Day on April 8, 2015; and
55 WHEREAS, A resource and advocate for retired school
66 personnel across the state with nearly 80,000 members, the
77 association works diligently in behalf of current and future
88 public education retirees; and
99 WHEREAS, The association promotes the financial soundness
1010 of the pension and retiree health care programs through its
1111 support of a strong teacher retirement system; annuity payments
1212 from the Teacher Retirement System of Texas have exceeded $8.5
1313 billion, creating approximately 113,000 jobs in the Lone Star
1414 State; and
1515 WHEREAS, In addition, the association members devote time
1616 and energy to improving their local communities; each year, they
1717 give more than five and a half million hours of volunteer
1818 service, equivalent to a value of more than $130 million; many of
1919 these volunteer hours are dedicated to schools, where these
2020 retired educators encourage reading by providing more than
2121 700,000 books, including nearly 140,000 last year alone, to young
2222 Texans through the Children's Book Project; and
2323 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the Texas Retired Teachers
2424 Association has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to education
2525 and educators, and the members of this noteworthy organization are
2626 making a positive and lasting difference in the lives of countless
2727 residents of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
2929 Legislature, hereby recognize April 8, 2015, as Texas Retired
3030 Teachers Association Day at the State Capitol and extend to the
3131 participants sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and
3232 informative visit; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3434 prepared for the Texas Retired Teachers Association as an
3535 expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
