55 WHEREAS, Nueces County lost an admired public servant with
66 the passing of retired district clerk Oscar Soliz of Corpus
77 Christi on December 15, 2014, at the age of 80; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Corpus Christi on March 8, 1934, Oscar
99 Soliz was the son of Joe A. Soliz and Anita Gonzales Soliz; he
1010 excelled in both football and baseball as a high school student
1111 at Corpus Christi College-Academy; subsequently, he attended
1212 Texas Christian University on a football scholarship before
1313 completing bachelor's degrees in political science and law
1414 enforcement at Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mr. Soliz married his high school sweetheart, Ola
1616 Mae Trammell, in 1954; devoted to his family, he took great pride
1717 in his children, Joseph, Jesse, Jackie, and Jennifer, and
1818 steadfastly encouraged them to pursue their dreams; and
1919 WHEREAS, After working alongside his father for a number of
2020 years at the S and G Sales auto dealership, Mr. Soliz was elected
2121 Nueces County district clerk in 1970, becoming one of the first
2222 Latinos to win a countywide race in the area; his outstanding
2323 service in office spanned 32 years, and during that time, he not
2424 only excelled in fulfilling the duties of his position but also
2525 promoted good governance by taking on a range of additional
2626 responsibilities; he was appointed by Governor Preston Smith to
2727 the Criminal Justice Council and the Criminal Justice Board, and
2828 he represented Texas district clerks on task forces dealing with
2929 a host of issues, including child support enforcement and
3030 information technology; and
3131 WHEREAS, This dynamic leader was the longest-serving
3232 member of the National Association of County Officials Board, and
3333 for more than a quarter of a century, he was a member of the
3434 boards of the Texas Association of Counties and the Texas
3535 Association of Regional Councils; in addition, he served as chair
3636 of the Coastal Bend Council of Governments and as president of
3737 the National Association of Regional Councils, the National
3838 Association of Hispanic County Officials, and the National
3939 Association of County Recorders, Election Officials and Clerks;
4040 highly respected by his peers, he was the recipient of a long list
4141 of prestigious accolades from national and state professional
4242 organizations; and
4343 WHEREAS, In addition to his other achievements, Mr. Soliz
4444 held leadership positions in such organizations as the Boy Scouts
4545 of America, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and
4646 the United Way of the Coastal Bend; he belonged to Saint John the
4747 Baptist Catholic Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus
4848 and the International Order of Alhambra; an enthusiastic
4949 political activist, he supported Democratic candidates at the
5050 local, state, and national levels, served on the Democratic
5151 National Committee, and was a super delegate at a number of the
5252 party's national conventions; moreover, he was elected by the
5353 Area Council on Aging to represent the Coastal Bend Region in the
5454 Texas Silver-Haired Legislature; and
5555 WHEREAS, A warmhearted, humble, and engaging man, Oscar
5656 Soliz is deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues,
5757 but they will continue to find inspiration in the outstanding
5858 contributions he made to his community and state; now, therefore,
5959 be it
6060 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
6161 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Oscar Soliz and
6262 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: his
6363 wife of 60 years, Ola Mae Soliz; his sons, Joseph Soliz and his
6464 wife, Juanita, and Jesse Soliz and his wife, Judy Pokorny; his
6565 daughters, Jackie Soliz-Chapa and her husband, Mario Chapa, and
6666 Jennifer Soliz; his grandchildren, Lauren and Michael Soliz; and
6767 his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
6868 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
6969 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
7070 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
7171 memory of Oscar Soliz.
