55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of the Honorable John V.
77 Singleton, who died March 20, 2015, at the age of 97; and
88 WHEREAS, John Singleton was born on March 20, 1918, in
99 Kaufman; he enriched the lives of all who knew him and was known
1010 for his integrity, his kindness, and his enthusiasm for living
1111 each day to the fullest; he became a highly regarded United
1212 States district judge; and
1313 WHEREAS, Mr. Singleton joined the United States Navy in
1414 1942 and served with distinction as a gunnery officer aboard the
1515 U.S.S. Dempsey during World War II; while on patrol, he helped
1616 lead efforts to rescue three downed United States Marine pilots
1717 near the Saint Matthias Islands; and
1818 WHEREAS, After his military service, Mr. Singleton began
1919 practicing law in the trial department of Fulbright, Crooker,
2020 Freeman and Bates; he started his own firm in 1954 and soon became
2121 a key player in Democratic politics; and
2222 WHEREAS, He was a regional coordinator for the Lyndon
2323 Johnson presidential campaign in 1964, and he was appointed to
2424 the federal bench by President Johnson in 1966; during his 27
2525 years as a United States judge, he oversaw criminal and civil
2626 cases that were seldom overturned in the appeals process; he was
2727 known as a champion for the downtrodden and is credited with
2828 transitioning his courthouse and the Southern Judicial District
2929 into the computer age; and
3030 WHEREAS, Judge Singleton was the devoted husband of Jane
3131 Singleton; after her death, he married Patsy Singleton, and they
3232 shared 11 years of happiness; he was a highly respected
3333 professional and a beloved member of his community, and he will
3434 long be remembered with deep admiration by all who were
3535 privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3737 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3838 family of the Honorable John V. Singleton; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4040 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4141 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4242 memory of John Singleton.
