| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Reverend Anthony Mays, who is being honored by the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Round Rock Independent School District School Board of Trustees for |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | his pioneering role in the desegregation of Round Rock schools; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | officially ended segregation in the state, and that same year, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | 15-year-old Anthony Mays became the first African American to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | enroll at Round Rock High School; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Racial tensions remained high during the mid-1960s, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and although Reverend Mays recalls some early struggles, he quickly |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | made friends through his participation in athletics, and he |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | embarked on a fulfilling educational journey; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, He embraced new opportunities at the high school |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class; after |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | graduation, he went on to earn an English degree at The |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | University of Texas; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Reverend Mays serves as a senior pastor at Mount |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in East Austin, where he |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | continues to advocate for racial equality; he is being honored by |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the board of the Round Rock Independent School District to mark |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the 50th anniversary of desegregation and his enrollment at the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | district's high school; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Reverend Anthony Mays on his life |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | of leadership and service and extend to him best wishes for the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
