| 5 | 5 | | youth volunteers in Texas; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Sponsored by Prudential Financial and the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Spirit |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | of Community Awards annually honors students in middle school |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | and high school who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | to serving their communities; this year, more than 30,000 teens |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | from across the nation were considered for recognition; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, A 17-year-old junior at Plano West Senior High |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | School, Katherine Thomas used a $3,000 grant from Dell to |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | organize a free summer computer programming and robotics class |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | for 50 children, which she taught with the help of students |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | from The University of Texas; additionally, she is a member of |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the FIRST LEGO League sixth-place world team, and she has |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | volunteered her time and talents with a local Girl Scout troop, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | teaching and serving as a mentor in the areas of science, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | technology, engineering, and math; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Katherine Thomas has shown remarkable initiative |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and determination in the pursuit of a worthy goal, and this |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | outstanding young Texan is a source of inspiration to all who are |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Katherine Thomas on her |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | selection as a Distinguished Finalist in the 2015 Prudential |

| 28 | 28 | | Spirit of Community Awards and extend to her sincere best wishes |
