55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Jefferson Jones
77 Baskin, who died March 25, 2015, at the age of 48; and
88 WHEREAS, J. J. Baskin was born on June 21, 1966, in
99 Midland; he dedicated his life to improving education in the
1010 state and gained nationwide recognition for his extensive public
1111 and philanthropic endeavors; and
1212 WHEREAS, He settled in Austin after earning a bachelor's
1313 degree in political science at Trinity University in San Antonio,
1414 and he later earned a master's degree at the Lyndon Baines
1515 Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mr. Baskin actively supported political
1717 candidates who promoted education in Texas; he served as director
1818 of the Texas Lyceum, a nonpartisan group dedicated to education,
1919 and as a director of Public Agenda, a national nonprofit
2020 organization that helps diverse leaders and citizens navigate
2121 complex social issues; and
2222 WHEREAS, He became one of the state's leading experts in
2323 philanthropy by promoting private and nonprofit partnerships,
2424 and he gained national recognition as a lecturer at conferences
2525 on issues such as strategic planning and best practices for
2626 fund-raising; and
2727 WHEREAS, Mr. Baskin was a loving husband and father who put
2828 family and faith above all things; he was a longtime member of
2929 Covenant Presbyterian Church of Austin, where he served in
3030 several leadership positions; and
3131 WHEREAS, From membership in his children's Parent Teacher
3232 Association to work with national foundations, Mr. Baskin was
3333 committed to improving the quality of public education; he was
3434 respected for his integrity and compassion, and his valiant fight
3535 against cancer was inspirational; he leaves behind memories that
3636 will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in his
3737 life; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3939 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4040 family of Jefferson Jones Baskin; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4242 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4343 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4444 memory of Jefferson Baskin.
