2	2	WHEREAS, The South Texas College Dual Enrollment Academies
3	3	program was selected as a 2014 Examples of Excelencia finalist by
4	4	Excelencia in Education; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Excelencia in
6	6	Education is a national nonprofit organization that works to
7	7	accelerate Latino student success in higher education; the
8	8	organization's Examples of Excelencia initiative recognizes
9	9	programs around the country that effectively increase the
10	10	enrollment, performance, and graduation rates of Latino college
11	11	students; and
12	12	WHEREAS, One of 14 finalists for this prestigious honor,
13	13	the Dual Enrollment Academies program at South Texas College
14	14	allows hardworking high school students to earn an associate's
15	15	degree in two years by taking high school courses in the morning
16	16	and dual credit classes at the college in the afternoon; and
17	17	WHEREAS, The program got its start with the establishment
18	18	of the college's Medical Science Academy in 2005 and the
19	19	Engineering Academy in 2006; it continued to expand over the next
20	20	several years as the college added the Computer Science Academy,
21	21	the Criminal Justice Academy, and the School to Career Academy,
22	22	which includes specializations in both welding and electronic
23	23	health records; and
24	24	WHEREAS, The faculty and staff of the Dual Enrollment
25	25	Academies further assist students in reaching their career goals
26	26	through seminars, counseling, mentorships, development
27	27	workshops, and volunteer opportunities in cooperation with area
28	28	businesses and industries; in addition, academy students have
29	29	been offered more than $11.9 million in scholarships since 2008,
30	30	and several have received the Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium
31	31	Scholarship; and
32	32	WHEREAS, By providing an innovative opportunity to pursue
33	33	a college education while still in high school, the Dual
34	34	Enrollment Academies program has helped many young Texans
35	35	prepare themselves for future success, and its selection as a
36	36	finalist for the Examples of Excelencia Award is indeed well
37	37	deserved; now, therefore, be it
38	38	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
39	39	Legislature, hereby congratulate the South Texas College Dual
40	40	Enrollment Academies program on being named a 2014 Examples of
41	41	Excelencia finalist and commend the faculty, staff, and students
42	42	of the program for their dedicated efforts; and, be it further
43	43	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
44	44	prepared for the program as an expression of high regard from the
45	45	Texas Senate.
