SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 544 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Abilene in commemorating the 70th anniversary of the closing of Camp Barkeley and the rededication of the camp's garrison flag pole at its new home in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene; and WHEREAS, Camp Barkeley was built during World War II on more than 70,000 acres southwest of Abilene; construction was begun in December of 1940, and the 45th Infantry Division began training at the site in February of 1941; and WHEREAS, During its active years, the camp provided training for 4,000 military medics and 12,500 civilian medical professionals who became United States Army officers; it was also a training site for infantrymen who liberated Nazi concentration camps; and WHEREAS, Camp Barkeley became the wartime home of the famed 12th Armored Division "Hellcats"; at its peak, the base housed and trained more than 60,000 soldiers, many of whom were part of General Patton's Third Army; the camp was deactivated on April 30, 1945; and WHEREAS, Camp Barkeley played an instrumental role in supporting Allied objectives during World War II; in commemoration of the camp's proud history, the Camp Barkeley garrison flag pole is being moved to the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature,herebycommemoratethe70thanniversaryofthe closing of Camp Barkeley and extend best wishes on the occasion of the rededication of the camp's garrison flag pole at its new location in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a memento of this special event.
