SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 545 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Austin Downtown Founder Lions Club, which is celebrating 100 years of community service on January 9, 2016; and WHEREAS, The Austin Downtown Founder Lions Club was established in 1916, one year prior to the founding of Lions International, and it is the oldest continuously operating Lions Club in the world; and WHEREAS, The club's members follow a very simple motto, "We Serve," and they have been living up to that promise for a century; and WHEREAS, In its early years, the club focused on efforts supporting World War I, such as selling war bonds and raising funds for the Red Cross; today, the club continues to be a resource in times of crisis, while regularly promoting a broad range of local and regional initiatives; the chapter has gained recognition for its extensive volunteer work benefiting students of the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired; and WHEREAS, Members of the Austin Downtown Founder Lions Club uphold a proud tradition of community service and promote the values of good citizenship; they are indeed deserving of recognition for their many contributions to the city and the region; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Austin Downtown Founder Lions Club for their invaluable contributions to the community and extend congratulations to all as they celebrate 100 years of service; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the club as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
