5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Martha Ellen Bonner Miller, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | March 26, 2015, at the age of 90; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Martha Miller was born on December 16, 1924, in |
---|
9 | 9 | | San Antonio, to Willa Calhoun and Z. David Bonner; she was |
---|
10 | 10 | | extremely proud of her family's rich history; she was a direct |
---|
11 | 11 | | descendent of Nathaniel Bilberry, who served in General George |
---|
12 | 12 | | Washington's Commander in Chief Life Guard, and she was related |
---|
13 | 13 | | to United States Vice President John C. Calhoun; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Miller was hired by the Texas Senate in 1966 |
---|
15 | 15 | | to create the Capitol Information and Guide Service; under her |
---|
16 | 16 | | leadership, it became a highly knowledgeable and professional |
---|
17 | 17 | | guide service; she later served for 30 years as executive |
---|
18 | 18 | | director of the Texas Association of Defense Counsel; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, She was active in a wide range of civic, |
---|
20 | 20 | | historical, and philanthropic organizations, including the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the |
---|
22 | 22 | | Confederacy, the Austin Civil War Roundtable, and the Austin |
---|
23 | 23 | | Women's Club; she was a docent of the Texas Governor's Mansion and |
---|
24 | 24 | | served as board president of Zachary Scott Theater; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, She was a woman of grace, dignity, and discipline |
---|
26 | 26 | | who gave generously to others; she was noted for her intellectual |
---|
27 | 27 | | pursuits and her dry sense of humor, and her enthusiasm for |
---|
28 | 28 | | living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, She was devoted to her large and loving family and |
---|
30 | 30 | | extended family members, and she leaves behind memories that will |
---|
31 | 31 | | long be cherished by those who were privileged to share in her |
---|
32 | 32 | | life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
35 | 35 | | family of Martha Ellen Bonner Miller; and, be it further |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
37 | 37 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
38 | 38 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
39 | 39 | | memory of Martha Ellen Bonner Miller. |
