| 3 | 3 | | Hospital earned worldwide acclaim by successfully separating |

| 4 | 4 | | conjoined twins on February 17, 2015; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, An extraordinarily delicate procedure, the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | separation took months of preparation; the twins, Knatalye and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Adeline Mata, shared several organ systems when they were born |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | prematurely in April 2014, and they were cared for in the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | hospital's Level IV neonatal intensive care unit; in advance of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the surgery, three-dimensional models of skeletons, blood |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | vessels, and organs were created and the staff conducted a |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | five-hour simulation; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, On the morning of the surgery, the team of over 30 |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | highly skilled professionals included 8 nurses, 6 anesthesiologists, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and 12 surgeons; among the specialists were experts in pediatric |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | surgery, liver transplant surgery, orthopedic surgery, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | cardiovascular surgery, urology, pediatric gynecology, and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | plastic surgery; the complex procedure took 26 hours, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | encompassing 18 hours for the initial separation and additional |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | time to ensure that each twin will be able to lead a healthy, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | independent life; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, This remarkable surgery was the first such |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | procedure in Houston in nearly two decades, and the members of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | this outstanding surgical team are to be commended for their |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | tremendous accomplishment in making the impossible possible for |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | two little girls and their family; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate the Texas Children's Hospital |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | surgical team on the successful separation of conjoined twins and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | extend to the doctors, nurses, and staff sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the future; and, be it further |
