55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Don L. Rives, who died March 27, 2015, at
77 the age of 80; and
88 WHEREAS, Don Rives was born September 8, 1934, in Marshall,
99 to Lois Maurine Anderson Rives and Luther Aaron Rives; as a young
1010 boy, he performed with the Apollo Boys' Choir in venues across
1111 the country, notably the Bell Telephone Hour winter holiday
1212 national broadcast from New York City in the early 1940s; and
1313 WHEREAS, He was a 1952 honors graduate of Marshall High
1414 School, where he served as student body president and as
1515 president of the Texas State Association of Student Councils; he
1616 went on to graduate summa cum laude from North Texas State
1717 College, now the University of North Texas, and to earn a law
1818 degree from The University of Texas School of Law; and
1919 WHEREAS, Mr. Rives returned to his hometown in 1959 and
2020 served as assistant district attorney for Harrison County, and he
2121 later entered private practice at the law firm of Bibb and Rives;
2222 he was appointed United States Magistrate, Marshall Division,
2323 for the Eastern District of Texas in 1965; and
2424 WHEREAS, He served the state with distinction as a member
2525 of the Constitutional Revision Commission, and in 1974, he became
2626 executive assistant to Lieutenant Governor William P. Hobby, and
2727 he served as executive director of the Association of Electric
2828 Companies of Texas; he was later appointed by Governor Ann
2929 Richards to the University of North Texas Board of Regents, and
3030 he also served on the university's athletic council; and
3131 WHEREAS, Mr. Rives was active in a wide range of
3232 professional, civic, and philanthropic organizations, including
3333 the Harrison County Hospital Association board of trustees, the
3434 Marshall Independent School District Board of Trustees, Camp
3535 Fire, the Boy Scouts of America, the Westlake High School Chap
3636 Club, Booster Club, and Choral Department, and the administrative
3737 board of First United Methodist Church in Austin; and
3838 WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife of 54 years, Pat, raised
3939 three children together and were blessed with seven grandchildren,
4040 whose activities Don followed with great interest; and
4141 WHEREAS, Don Rives was a respected leader who contributed
4242 greatly to his community; a man of courage, compassion, and
4343 integrity, he gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth,
4444 and wise counsel will not be forgotten; and
4545 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
4646 and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
4747 his family and his many friends; now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4949 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5050 family of Don L. Rives; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5252 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5353 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5454 memory of Don Rives.
