2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery celebrated its |

3 | 3 | | 80th anniversary on April 15, 2015; and |
---|
4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, Since its opening in 1935, the refinery has played |
---|
5 | 5 | | a vital role in its community, where today it employs more than a |
---|
6 | 6 | | thousand people and generates an annual average of $345 million |
---|
7 | 7 | | in economic activity; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, CITGO has further benefited the city through its |
---|
9 | 9 | | dedication to corporate philanthropy; over the past decade, the |
---|
10 | 10 | | refinery and its employees have contributed more than $5.8 million |
---|
11 | 11 | | in behalf of 37 local charities through donations to the United Way |
---|
12 | 12 | | of the Coastal Bend, and in 2014, employees volunteered over 4,000 |
---|
13 | 13 | | hours with community organizations; moreover, in 2012, CITGO |
---|
14 | 14 | | launched the Hands for Hillcrest Grant Program, which supports |
---|
15 | 15 | | initiatives that foster education, job skills, health care, and the |
---|
16 | 16 | | environment in the Hillcrest community; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Strongly committed to promoting educational |
---|
18 | 18 | | opportunity in the region, the refinery has awarded more than 170 |
---|
19 | 19 | | scholarships to area students through the Corpus Christi |
---|
20 | 20 | | Caller-Times/CITGO South Texas Distinguished Scholars program, |
---|
21 | 21 | | and it has collaborated in establishing the First in Family |
---|
22 | 22 | | program, which presents scholarships to local students who are |
---|
23 | 23 | | the first in their family to graduate from high school; in |
---|
24 | 24 | | addition, the refinery partners with the Foy H. Moody High School |
---|
25 | 25 | | Innovation Academy to encourage students to pursue careers in the |
---|
26 | 26 | | fields of science, technology, engineering, and math; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the past eight decades, the CITGO |
---|
28 | 28 | | CorpusChristiRefineryhasmadeasubstantialcontributionto |
---|
29 | 29 | | the Texas economy while giving back to its community in myriad |
---|
30 | 30 | | ways, and this occasion presents a welcome opportunity to |
---|
31 | 31 | | recognize the role it plays in advancing the prosperity of Corpus |

32 | 32 | | Christi and the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |

34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 80th anniversary of the CITGO |

35 | 35 | | Corpus Christi Refinery and extend to all those associated with |

36 | 36 | | the refinery sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
