11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 586
22 WHEREAS, The CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery celebrated its
33 80th anniversary on April 15, 2015; and
44 WHEREAS, Since its opening in 1935, the refinery has played
55 a vital role in its community, where today it employs more than a
66 thousand people and generates an annual average of $345 million
77 in economic activity; and
88 WHEREAS, CITGO has further benefited the city through its
99 dedication to corporate philanthropy; over the past decade, the
1010 refinery and its employees have contributed more than $5.8 million
1111 in behalf of 37 local charities through donations to the United Way
1212 of the Coastal Bend, and in 2014, employees volunteered over 4,000
1313 hours with community organizations; moreover, in 2012, CITGO
1414 launched the Hands for Hillcrest Grant Program, which supports
1515 initiatives that foster education, job skills, health care, and the
1616 environment in the Hillcrest community; and
1717 WHEREAS, Strongly committed to promoting educational
1818 opportunity in the region, the refinery has awarded more than 170
1919 scholarships to area students through the Corpus Christi
2020 Caller-Times/CITGO South Texas Distinguished Scholars program,
2121 and it has collaborated in establishing the First in Family
2222 program, which presents scholarships to local students who are
2323 the first in their family to graduate from high school; in
2424 addition, the refinery partners with the Foy H. Moody High School
2525 Innovation Academy to encourage students to pursue careers in the
2626 fields of science, technology, engineering, and math; and
2727 WHEREAS, Throughout the past eight decades, the CITGO
2828 CorpusChristiRefineryhasmadeasubstantialcontributionto
2929 the Texas economy while giving back to its community in myriad
3030 ways, and this occasion presents a welcome opportunity to
3131 recognize the role it plays in advancing the prosperity of Corpus
3232 Christi and the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3434 Legislature, hereby commemorate the 80th anniversary of the CITGO
3535 Corpus Christi Refinery and extend to all those associated with
3636 the refinery sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3838 prepared for the CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery as an expression
3939 of high regard from the Texas Senate.
