55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of San Antonio and San Marcos in mourning the loss of
77 O. C. Haley, who died April 4, 2015, at the age of 74; and
88 WHEREAS, O. C. Haley was born on February 12, 1941, in
99 Poteet; he was a star football player at Poteet High School, and
1010 in 1959, he was named the First Team All-State Center; he played
1111 football at the University of Oklahoma for a year and then
1212 returned to his home state to play for Southwest Texas State
1313 College, now known as Texas State University; and
1414 WHEREAS, He became a diehard Bobcat and when an injury
1515 ended his football career, he redirected his enthusiasm for the
1616 school by becoming manager of the Strutters, the school's
1717 precision dance team; he continued to support the Strutters long
1818 after his college years; and
1919 WHEREAS, Mr. Haley was one of Texas State University's most
2020 active and honored alumni; he traveled around the world with the
2121 Strutters, and he helped fund numerous projects for the team and
2222 for Bobcat athletes; he served multiple terms as president of the
2323 Bexar County Chapter of the Texas Alumni Association, and over
2424 the years, he was recognized with numerous alumni awards; and
2525 WHEREAS, In addition to his extensive work on behalf of the
2626 university, Mr. Haley had a rewarding career as a driver's
2727 education instructor and as an administrator with the North East
2828 Independent School District in San Antonio; during his tenure
2929 with the district, he published Standards for High School Driver
3030 Education in Texas and was often invited to address the Texas
3131 State Board of Education and the Texas House and Senate Education
3232 Committees as a subject matter expert on educational issues; and
3333 WHEREAS, He shared nearly 17 years of marriage with Johanna
3434 Stallman, a former Strutters captain, and he was blessed with two
3535 stepchildren and two stepgrandchildren; and
3636 WHEREAS, Mr. Haley was a revered citizen who was beloved by
3737 many, and his exceptional contributions to his alma mater and to
3838 his state will not be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4040 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4141 family of O. C. Haley; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4343 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4444 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4545 memory of O. C. Haley.
