5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of San Antonio and San Marcos in mourning the loss of |
---|
7 | 7 | | O. C. Haley, who died April 4, 2015, at the age of 74; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, O. C. Haley was born on February 12, 1941, in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Poteet; he was a star football player at Poteet High School, and |
---|
10 | 10 | | in 1959, he was named the First Team All-State Center; he played |
---|
11 | 11 | | football at the University of Oklahoma for a year and then |
---|
12 | 12 | | returned to his home state to play for Southwest Texas State |
---|
13 | 13 | | College, now known as Texas State University; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, He became a diehard Bobcat and when an injury |
---|
15 | 15 | | ended his football career, he redirected his enthusiasm for the |
---|
16 | 16 | | school by becoming manager of the Strutters, the school's |
---|
17 | 17 | | precision dance team; he continued to support the Strutters long |
---|
18 | 18 | | after his college years; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Haley was one of Texas State University's most |
---|
20 | 20 | | active and honored alumni; he traveled around the world with the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Strutters, and he helped fund numerous projects for the team and |
---|
22 | 22 | | for Bobcat athletes; he served multiple terms as president of the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Bexar County Chapter of the Texas Alumni Association, and over |
---|
24 | 24 | | the years, he was recognized with numerous alumni awards; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his extensive work on behalf of the |
---|
26 | 26 | | university, Mr. Haley had a rewarding career as a driver's |
---|
27 | 27 | | education instructor and as an administrator with the North East |
---|
28 | 28 | | Independent School District in San Antonio; during his tenure |
---|
29 | 29 | | with the district, he published Standards for High School Driver |
---|
30 | 30 | | Education in Texas and was often invited to address the Texas |
---|
31 | 31 | | State Board of Education and the Texas House and Senate Education |
---|
32 | 32 | | Committees as a subject matter expert on educational issues; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, He shared nearly 17 years of marriage with Johanna |
---|
34 | 34 | | Stallman, a former Strutters captain, and he was blessed with two |
---|
35 | 35 | | stepchildren and two stepgrandchildren; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Haley was a revered citizen who was beloved by |
---|
37 | 37 | | many, and his exceptional contributions to his alma mater and to |
---|
38 | 38 | | his state will not be forgotten; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
41 | 41 | | family of O. C. Haley; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
43 | 43 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
45 | 45 | | memory of O. C. Haley. |
