1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 627
2	2	WHEREAS, The year 2015 marks the 35th anniversary of the
3	3	founding of Young Conservatives of Texas, and the Texas Senate is
4	4	pleased to recognize this significant milestone in the
5	5	organization's history; and
6	6	WHEREAS, A group of 177 students met in Austin at the
7	7	Stephen F. Austin Hotel on Texas Independence Day, March 2, 1980,
8	8	to establish Young Conservatives of Texas; and
9	9	WHEREAS, A nonpartisan and independent youth organization,
10	10	Young Conservatives of Texas was founded to attract students who
11	11	believe in a conservative philosophy of government and to afford
12	12	those students the opportunity to participate effectively in the
13	13	political process; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Young Conservatives of Texas is dedicated to
15	15	promoting its Statement of Principles, including the beliefs
16	16	that the Constitution was instituted for the protection of
17	17	God-given rights, that the American system of Federalism,
18	18	describing limited government and state sovereignty, serves to
19	19	protect those rights, that economic freedom and the free
20	20	enterprise system are essential to liberty, and that the aim of
21	21	American foreign policy should be the protection of the freedom
22	22	of the American people; and
23	23	WHEREAS, For three and a half decades, Young Conservatives
24	24	of Texas has served as a strong force on college campuses
25	25	throughout the state, regularly hosting speakers and events
26	26	representing a wide range of conservative thought; and
27	27	WHEREAS, The organization is well known for inspiring
28	28	young people in our state to become involved in politics, for
29	29	maintaining an active presence as a lobby at the Texas
30	30	Legislature, and for placing alumni in all levels of government
31	31	and public policy, including the Texas Legislature and
32	32	Congress; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Young Conservatives of Texas also maintains a
34	34	long running and respected set of legislative ratings that assess
35	35	the actions of members of the Texas Legislature according to
36	36	their adherence to conservative principles; and
37	37	WHEREAS, The group successfully advocates for conservative
38	38	candidates during both primary and general elections, through
39	39	block walking, phone banks, straw polls, and contributions
40	40	through its political action committee; moreover, it was
41	41	instrumental in the election of both Lieutenant Governor Dan
42	42	Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton during the past election
43	43	cycle; and
44	44	WHEREAS, Young Conservatives of Texas has benefited from
45	45	the dedicated leadership of 23 state chairmen: Steve Munisteri
46	46	(1980), Gary Nelson (1981), Greg Robertson (1982), Frank Reilly
47	47	(1982-1986), Richard Munisteri (1987), Steve Stockman
48	48	(1987-1988), Paul Bartley (1988-1989), Sharin Shafer
49	49	(1990-1991), Scott Gaille (1991-1992), Andy Panos (1992-1993),
50	50	Shawn Roberts (1993), David Guenthner (1994), Robert Johnson
51	51	(1994-1996), Robert Means (1996-1997), Fred Tate (1997-1999),
52	52	Liz Farrell (1999), Brent Tantillo (2000), Chris Allen
53	53	(2001-2003), David Rushing (2003-2005), Randy Samuelson
54	54	(2005-2006), David White (2006-2009), Elizabeth White
55	55	(2009-2011), and Jeff Morris (2011-Present); and
56	56	WHEREAS, The group has many notable alumni, including
57	57	former Republican Party of Texas Chairman Steve Munisteri,
58	58	United States Senator Rand Paul, United States Congressman Jeb
59	59	Hensarling, and former United States Congressman Steve
60	60	Stockman; and
61	61	WHEREAS, The members of Young Conservatives of Texas have
62	62	consistently worked hard to promote the conservative principles
63	63	in which they believe, and they have contributed their time and
64	64	energy to many political campaigns; on March 2, 2015, they
65	65	celebrated their group's numerous achievements during the past
66	66	three and a half decades; now, therefore, be it
67	67	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
68	68	Legislature, hereby commemorate the 35th anniversary of Young
69	69	Conservatives of Texas and extend to its members sincere best
70	70	wishes for the future; and, be it further
71	71	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
72	72	prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard
73	73	from the Texas Senate.
