11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 627
22 WHEREAS, The year 2015 marks the 35th anniversary of the
33 founding of Young Conservatives of Texas, and the Texas Senate is
44 pleased to recognize this significant milestone in the
55 organization's history; and
66 WHEREAS, A group of 177 students met in Austin at the
77 Stephen F. Austin Hotel on Texas Independence Day, March 2, 1980,
88 to establish Young Conservatives of Texas; and
99 WHEREAS, A nonpartisan and independent youth organization,
1010 Young Conservatives of Texas was founded to attract students who
1111 believe in a conservative philosophy of government and to afford
1212 those students the opportunity to participate effectively in the
1313 political process; and
1414 WHEREAS, Young Conservatives of Texas is dedicated to
1515 promoting its Statement of Principles, including the beliefs
1616 that the Constitution was instituted for the protection of
1717 God-given rights, that the American system of Federalism,
1818 describing limited government and state sovereignty, serves to
1919 protect those rights, that economic freedom and the free
2020 enterprise system are essential to liberty, and that the aim of
2121 American foreign policy should be the protection of the freedom
2222 of the American people; and
2323 WHEREAS, For three and a half decades, Young Conservatives
2424 of Texas has served as a strong force on college campuses
2525 throughout the state, regularly hosting speakers and events
2626 representing a wide range of conservative thought; and
2727 WHEREAS, The organization is well known for inspiring
2828 young people in our state to become involved in politics, for
2929 maintaining an active presence as a lobby at the Texas
3030 Legislature, and for placing alumni in all levels of government
3131 and public policy, including the Texas Legislature and
3232 Congress; and
3333 WHEREAS, Young Conservatives of Texas also maintains a
3434 long running and respected set of legislative ratings that assess
3535 the actions of members of the Texas Legislature according to
3636 their adherence to conservative principles; and
3737 WHEREAS, The group successfully advocates for conservative
3838 candidates during both primary and general elections, through
3939 block walking, phone banks, straw polls, and contributions
4040 through its political action committee; moreover, it was
4141 instrumental in the election of both Lieutenant Governor Dan
4242 Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton during the past election
4343 cycle; and
4444 WHEREAS, Young Conservatives of Texas has benefited from
4545 the dedicated leadership of 23 state chairmen: Steve Munisteri
4646 (1980), Gary Nelson (1981), Greg Robertson (1982), Frank Reilly
4747 (1982-1986), Richard Munisteri (1987), Steve Stockman
4848 (1987-1988), Paul Bartley (1988-1989), Sharin Shafer
4949 (1990-1991), Scott Gaille (1991-1992), Andy Panos (1992-1993),
5050 Shawn Roberts (1993), David Guenthner (1994), Robert Johnson
5151 (1994-1996), Robert Means (1996-1997), Fred Tate (1997-1999),
5252 Liz Farrell (1999), Brent Tantillo (2000), Chris Allen
5353 (2001-2003), David Rushing (2003-2005), Randy Samuelson
5454 (2005-2006), David White (2006-2009), Elizabeth White
5555 (2009-2011), and Jeff Morris (2011-Present); and
5656 WHEREAS, The group has many notable alumni, including
5757 former Republican Party of Texas Chairman Steve Munisteri,
5858 United States Senator Rand Paul, United States Congressman Jeb
5959 Hensarling, and former United States Congressman Steve
6060 Stockman; and
6161 WHEREAS, The members of Young Conservatives of Texas have
6262 consistently worked hard to promote the conservative principles
6363 in which they believe, and they have contributed their time and
6464 energy to many political campaigns; on March 2, 2015, they
6565 celebrated their group's numerous achievements during the past
6666 three and a half decades; now, therefore, be it
6767 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
6868 Legislature, hereby commemorate the 35th anniversary of Young
6969 Conservatives of Texas and extend to its members sincere best
7070 wishes for the future; and, be it further
7171 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
7272 prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard
7373 from the Texas Senate.
