| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join Texans across the state in celebrating the 179th anniversary |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | of the Battle of San Jacinto; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, This momentous occasion is being observed on |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | April 21, 2015, with an Official State of Texas Ceremony at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Battle of San Jacinto was fought on the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | afternoon of April 21, 1836, only weeks after the massacres at |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the Alamo and Goliad; the Texian army advanced on the troops of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna with shouts of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad" and defeated the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Mexican army in a matter of only 18 minutes; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The Texians, under the command of General Sam |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Houston, routed Santa Anna's army despite having significantly |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | fewer troops; while only nine Texians lost their lives, 630 |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Mexican soldiers were killed in the battle and more than 700 were |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | taken prisoner; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The 179th anniversary celebration of this |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | auspicious battle features a wide range of organizations and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | individuals, including the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the Sons of the Republic of Texas, the Deer Park High School |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Orchestra, the staff of the San Jacinto Museum of History, and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Nancy Burch, the great-great-granddaughter of Sam Houston; it is |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | truly fitting that this historic event be celebrated by Texans |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | everywhere; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the brave men and women who |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | led the fight for Texas' independence and extend best wishes to |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the sponsors and organizers of the Official State of Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Ceremony commemorating the 179th anniversary of the Battle of San |
