| 3 | 3 | | the Don't Mess with Texas campaign in 1986 to educate Texans |

| 4 | 4 | | about the effects of littering and to get the public involved in |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | keeping Texas beautiful; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Department of Transportation has |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | developed several litter prevention programs, including the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Adopt-a-Highway volunteer program, the Don't Mess with Texas |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | anti-litter campaign, and a grassroots partnership with Keep |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Texas Beautiful; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The Don't Mess with Texas campaign has become one |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | of the nation's most successful anti-litter campaigns; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In the last two years, visible litter has |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | decreased on Texas Highways by 34 percent, despite the state's |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | significant population growth; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off is the state's |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | largest cleanup event; community engagement has been achieved |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | through grassroots partnership with businesses, civic and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | nonprofit organizations, and schools; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Whataburger has joined the highway department in |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | a partnership to communicate the anti-litter prevention message |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | to Texans of all ages; this partnership between two Texas icons |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | will help to raise awareness and to preserve the beauty of Texas |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | highways; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, New public service announcements featuring the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | slogan "Small Trash, Big Mess" will be released this summer to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | discourage littering on Texas highways; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, With the increased number of vehicles on Texas |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | roadways, much remains to be done in the effort to keep Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | highways as safe and scenic pathways throughout the state; now, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 29, 2015, as Don't Mess with |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Texas Day and encourage all Texans to commit to keeping Texas |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | beautiful. |
