4 | 4 | | Heritage Site designation for the five Spanish Colonial missions |

5 | 5 | | established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Determined to expand its influence in the New |
---|
7 | 7 | | World, Spain built missions to convert indigenous people to |
---|
8 | 8 | | Catholicism, to acclimate them in some measure to Hispanic |
---|
9 | 9 | | culture, and to make them subjects of the Spanish crown; these |
---|
10 | 10 | | frontier institutions provided not only religious instruction, |
---|
11 | 11 | | but also occupational training and education in the Spanish |
---|
12 | 12 | | language and system of government; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Vibrant communities grew up around these |
---|
14 | 14 | | outposts, and the city of San Antonio owes its existence to its |
---|
15 | 15 | | five missions, San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, Nuestra Señora de |
---|
16 | 16 | | la Purísima Concepción de Acuña, San Francisco de la Espada, San |
---|
17 | 17 | | Juan Capistrano, and San Antonio de Valero, better known as the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Alamo; these represent the largest concentration of Catholic |
---|
19 | 19 | | missions in North America; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, World Heritage Site designation is granted under |
---|
21 | 21 | | the World Heritage Convention, which seeks to enhance |
---|
22 | 22 | | understanding, appreciation, and international cooperation for |
---|
23 | 23 | | heritage conservation, pursuing an ideal similar to that |
---|
24 | 24 | | advanced by the American National Park system; in 1973, the |
---|
25 | 25 | | United States became one of the nearly 200 nations to ratify the |
---|
26 | 26 | | convention, an independent treaty administered under UNESCO; |
---|
27 | 27 | | current sites include the Egyptian pyramids and Australia's |
---|
28 | 28 | | Great Barrier Reef, as well as our nation's own Statue of Liberty |
---|
29 | 29 | | and Grand Canyon; if accepted, the San Antonio missions would |
---|
30 | 30 | | become the first World Heritage Site in the State of Texas; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, World Heritage designation confirms the |
---|
32 | 32 | | extraordinary cultural significance of sites and contributes to |
---|
33 | 33 | | their preservation, and this recognition typically leads to |
---|
34 | 34 | | increased international tourism and greater access to historians |
---|
35 | 35 | | and preservation specialists; by supporting the National Park |
---|
36 | 36 | | Service in its endeavors in behalf of the Spanish Colonial |
---|
37 | 37 | | missions, the City of San Antonio and Bexar County are taking an |
---|
38 | 38 | | important step to heighten global awareness of these |
---|
39 | 39 | | irreplaceable cultural treasures and the richness of Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | history; now, therefore, be it |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |

42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby commend the City of San Antonio and Bexar |
