11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 644
22 WHEREAS, The City of San Antonio and Bexar County are
33 supporting the National Park Service in its application for World
44 Heritage Site designation for the five Spanish Colonial missions
55 established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century; and
66 WHEREAS, Determined to expand its influence in the New
77 World, Spain built missions to convert indigenous people to
88 Catholicism, to acclimate them in some measure to Hispanic
99 culture, and to make them subjects of the Spanish crown; these
1010 frontier institutions provided not only religious instruction,
1111 but also occupational training and education in the Spanish
1212 language and system of government; and
1313 WHEREAS, Vibrant communities grew up around these
1414 outposts, and the city of San Antonio owes its existence to its
1515 five missions, San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, Nuestra Señora de
1616 la Purísima Concepción de Acuña, San Francisco de la Espada, San
1717 Juan Capistrano, and San Antonio de Valero, better known as the
1818 Alamo; these represent the largest concentration of Catholic
1919 missions in North America; and
2020 WHEREAS, World Heritage Site designation is granted under
2121 the World Heritage Convention, which seeks to enhance
2222 understanding, appreciation, and international cooperation for
2323 heritage conservation, pursuing an ideal similar to that
2424 advanced by the American National Park system; in 1973, the
2525 United States became one of the nearly 200 nations to ratify the
2626 convention, an independent treaty administered under UNESCO;
2727 current sites include the Egyptian pyramids and Australia's
2828 Great Barrier Reef, as well as our nation's own Statue of Liberty
2929 and Grand Canyon; if accepted, the San Antonio missions would
3030 become the first World Heritage Site in the State of Texas; and
3131 WHEREAS, World Heritage designation confirms the
3232 extraordinary cultural significance of sites and contributes to
3333 their preservation, and this recognition typically leads to
3434 increased international tourism and greater access to historians
3535 and preservation specialists; by supporting the National Park
3636 Service in its endeavors in behalf of the Spanish Colonial
3737 missions, the City of San Antonio and Bexar County are taking an
3838 important step to heighten global awareness of these
3939 irreplaceable cultural treasures and the richness of Texas
4040 history; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
