| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | honor the City of Laredo and its representatives and to recognize |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | January 28, 2015, as Laredo Legislative Day at the Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Laredo was established in 1755 by Don Tomas |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Sanchez, and its history offers a compelling tale, as the town |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | was forged by Spaniards, Indians, Mexicans, Texans, and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Americans; a dynamic bilingual and bicultural community, this |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Texas city is proud of its Mexican roots; seven flags have flown |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | over this unique city, and Laredo celebrates its dual historical |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and cultural ties throughout the year; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Situated on the banks of the Rio Grande, Laredo is |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | now the 10th-largest city in Texas and the largest inland port on |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the southern United States border; it is one of the top four ports |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | of commerce in the nation, and in 2010, the city handled 40 |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | percent of all overland trade between the United States and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Mexico; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Education plays a vital role in the life of |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Laredo, where three institutes of higher learning offer multiple |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | educational options; Laredo Community College was first |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | established in 1947 on the 100-year-old grounds of the historic |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Fort McIntosh and now boasts two campuses to better serve the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | entire city; Texas A&M International University has been |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | educating local Laredo leaders for the past four decades, and the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | new University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Laredo Extension Campus is thriving and offers medical students |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | practical experience through interlocal agreements; now, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | therefore, be it |

| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | 84th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes for a productive and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | enjoyable Laredo Legislative Day at the Capitol; and, be it |
