11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 658
22 WHEREAS, Residents of Garland are gathering on April 11,
33 2015, for the dedication of an Official Texas Historical Marker
44 recognizing the Travis College Hill Addition; and
55 WHEREAS, Officially platted by the Interurban Land Company
66 on January 3, 1913, the Travis College Hill Addition encompasses
77 a two-block area along South 11th Street between Avenues B and D;
88 the area was previously designated as Garland's first historic
99 district by the city council in May 2014; and
1010 WHEREAS, Over the course of the past century, the Travis
1111 College Hill Addition has been home to some of the city's most
1212 prominent civic, political, and religious leaders, including
1313 three Garland mayors and five city council members; the
1414 Republican Party gained its first foothold in the formerly
1515 Democratic city on South 11th Street, where several early
1616 Republicans lived; this group included Dixie Crossman, who
1717 founded the Garland Republican Women's Club in 1955, as well as
1818 Mable Wheeler, a "Bush Belle" who served as a party precinct
1919 chair, as president of the Garland Republican Women's Club, and
2020 as a National Federation of Republican Women convention
2121 delegate; furthermore, Charles and Winifred Stokes held numerous
2222 events for Republican politicians such as George H. W. Bush and
2323 George W. Bush in their home on 11th Street; and
2424 WHEREAS, In addition to its political significance, the
2525 neighborhood features the recently relocated Pace House; built
2626 at the turn of the century, this Queen Anne style dwelling was
2727 donated to the city in 1985; though it served as an important
2828 community event center for many years, downtown development
2929 caused the city to donate the structure to local residents Louis
3030 and Kay Moore in 2014; the house was then moved to the Travis
3131 College Hill Addition, where it now shares its street with five
3232 other historic homes that date from 1915 to 1918; and
3333 WHEREAS, Recognition by the Texas Historical Commission is
3434 a testament to the importance of this notable neighborhood, and
3535 the placement of a marker in its honor will help future visitors
3636 to better appreciate the rich heritage of the Garland community;
3737 now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3939 Legislature, hereby commemorate the dedication of an Official
4040 Texas Historical Marker for the Travis College Hill Addition and
4141 extend to all the neighborhood's residents sincere best wishes
4242 for the future.
