2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Garland are gathering on April 11, |

3 | 3 | | 2015, for the dedication of an Official Texas Historical Marker |

4 | 4 | | recognizing the Travis College Hill Addition; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Officially platted by the Interurban Land Company |
---|
6 | 6 | | on January 3, 1913, the Travis College Hill Addition encompasses |
---|
7 | 7 | | a two-block area along South 11th Street between Avenues B and D; |
---|
8 | 8 | | the area was previously designated as Garland's first historic |
---|
9 | 9 | | district by the city council in May 2014; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of the past century, the Travis |
---|
11 | 11 | | College Hill Addition has been home to some of the city's most |
---|
12 | 12 | | prominent civic, political, and religious leaders, including |
---|
13 | 13 | | three Garland mayors and five city council members; the |
---|
14 | 14 | | Republican Party gained its first foothold in the formerly |
---|
15 | 15 | | Democratic city on South 11th Street, where several early |
---|
16 | 16 | | Republicans lived; this group included Dixie Crossman, who |
---|
17 | 17 | | founded the Garland Republican Women's Club in 1955, as well as |
---|
18 | 18 | | Mable Wheeler, a "Bush Belle" who served as a party precinct |
---|
19 | 19 | | chair, as president of the Garland Republican Women's Club, and |
---|
20 | 20 | | as a National Federation of Republican Women convention |
---|
21 | 21 | | delegate; furthermore, Charles and Winifred Stokes held numerous |
---|
22 | 22 | | events for Republican politicians such as George H. W. Bush and |
---|
23 | 23 | | George W. Bush in their home on 11th Street; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, In addition to its political significance, the |
---|
25 | 25 | | neighborhood features the recently relocated Pace House; built |
---|
26 | 26 | | at the turn of the century, this Queen Anne style dwelling was |
---|
27 | 27 | | donated to the city in 1985; though it served as an important |
---|
28 | 28 | | community event center for many years, downtown development |
---|
29 | 29 | | caused the city to donate the structure to local residents Louis |
---|
30 | 30 | | and Kay Moore in 2014; the house was then moved to the Travis |
---|
31 | 31 | | College Hill Addition, where it now shares its street with five |
---|
32 | 32 | | other historic homes that date from 1915 to 1918; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Recognition by the Texas Historical Commission is |
---|
34 | 34 | | a testament to the importance of this notable neighborhood, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | the placement of a marker in its honor will help future visitors |
---|
36 | 36 | | to better appreciate the rich heritage of the Garland community; |
---|
37 | 37 | | now, therefore, be it |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the dedication of an Official |

40 | 40 | | Texas Historical Marker for the Travis College Hill Addition and |

41 | 41 | | extend to all the neighborhood's residents sincere best wishes |
---|
