44 Billy Philip Arhos
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Billy Philip Arhos, who died April 11,
77 2015, at the age of 80; and
88 WHEREAS, Bill Arhos was born on November 3, 1934, in
99 Teague, to Philip and Helen Arhos; he grew up in Bryan, and he
1010 graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1953; he attended
1111 Rice University on a baseball and basketball scholarship and
1212 received a bachelor of science degree; he earned a master of
1313 education degree from Texas A&M University in 1960; and
1414 WHEREAS, He taught in the Bryan public schools for a time
1515 before taking a position in Austin to help establish a Public
1616 Broadcasting Service television station, KLRU-TV; over the
1717 course of his nearly 40-year career with the station, he served
1818 in numerous capacities; he was senior producer, production
1919 manager, vice president for programming, general manager, and
2020 president; and
2121 WHEREAS, In 1974, Mr. Arhos was instrumental in the
2222 creation of the music television series Austin City Limits, and
2323 he served as its executive producer for more than two decades;
2424 the show has now run for 41 years and has received such
2525 prestigious honors as the National Medal of Arts, the Peabody
2626 Award, and the W. C. Handy Blues Award; he also produced other
2727 television music specials and helped produce the Texas
2828 Connection, a series which aired for four years on TNN; and
2929 WHEREAS, He served on the boards of directors of the Public
3030 Broadcasting Service and the Country Music Association, and he
3131 received numerous honors, including a Distinguished Alumni Award
3232 from Rice University and induction into the inaugural class of
3333 the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame; upon his retirement, KLRU-TV
3434 established an endowment in his name; and
3535 WHEREAS, He was a man of courage and vision who was noted for
3636 his warmth and charismatic personality; he lived his life to the
3737 fullest and was beloved by his family and countless friends; and
3838 WHEREAS, He was devoted to his three children, six
3939 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, and he leaves
4040 behind memories that will be cherished forever by all who were
4141 privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4343 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4444 family of Billy Philip Arhos; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4646 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4747 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4848 memory of Billy Philip Arhos.
