4	4	Billy Philip Arhos
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	6	commemorates the life of Billy Philip Arhos, who died April 11,
7	7	2015, at the age of 80; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Bill Arhos was born on November 3, 1934, in
9	9	Teague, to Philip and Helen Arhos; he grew up in Bryan, and he
10	10	graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1953; he attended
11	11	Rice University on a baseball and basketball scholarship and
12	12	received a bachelor of science degree; he earned a master of
13	13	education degree from Texas A&M University in 1960; and
14	14	WHEREAS, He taught in the Bryan public schools for a time
15	15	before taking a position in Austin to help establish a Public
16	16	Broadcasting Service television station, KLRU-TV; over the
17	17	course of his nearly 40-year career with the station, he served
18	18	in numerous capacities; he was senior producer, production
19	19	manager, vice president for programming, general manager, and
20	20	president; and
21	21	WHEREAS, In 1974, Mr. Arhos was instrumental in the
22	22	creation of the music television series Austin City Limits, and
23	23	he served as its executive producer for more than two decades;
24	24	the show has now run for 41 years and has received such
25	25	prestigious honors as the National Medal of Arts, the Peabody
26	26	Award, and the W. C. Handy Blues Award; he also produced other
27	27	television music specials and helped produce the Texas
28	28	Connection, a series which aired for four years on TNN; and
29	29	WHEREAS, He served on the boards of directors of the Public
30	30	Broadcasting Service and the Country Music Association, and he
31	31	received numerous honors, including a Distinguished Alumni Award
32	32	from Rice University and induction into the inaugural class of
33	33	the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame; upon his retirement, KLRU-TV
34	34	established an endowment in his name; and
35	35	WHEREAS, He was a man of courage and vision who was noted for
36	36	his warmth and charismatic personality; he lived his life to the
37	37	fullest and was beloved by his family and countless friends; and
38	38	WHEREAS, He was devoted to his three children, six
39	39	grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, and he leaves
40	40	behind memories that will be cherished forever by all who were
41	41	privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
42	42	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
43	43	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
44	44	family of Billy Philip Arhos; and, be it further
45	45	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
46	46	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
47	47	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
48	48	memory of Billy Philip Arhos.
