5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |

6 | 6 | | citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Lanny van Allen, who |
---|
7 | 7 | | died March 27, 2015, at the age of 79; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Lanny van Allen was born on March 25, 1936, in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Somerset, Kentucky, and she spent her formative years in nearby |
---|
10 | 10 | | Lancaster; she earned a bachelor's degree from Centre College in |
---|
11 | 11 | | Danville, Kentucky, and a master's degree from George Peabody |
---|
12 | 12 | | College in Nashville, Tennessee; in 1991, she earned a doctorate |
---|
13 | 13 | | in curriculum development from The University of Texas; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to the field of education, Mrs. van |
---|
15 | 15 | | Allen spent 15 years teaching in middle school and high school |
---|
16 | 16 | | classrooms and was recognized for excellence on numerous |
---|
17 | 17 | | occasions; she regularly contributed to professional publications, |
---|
18 | 18 | | and she retired from a distinguished administrative career as |
---|
19 | 19 | | director of programs for English language arts in the Division of |
---|
20 | 20 | | Curriculum and Professional Development at the Texas Education |
---|
21 | 21 | | Agency; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, She shared 55 years of marriage with Dirk van |
---|
23 | 23 | | Allen; they were blessed with two children and two grandchildren, |
---|
24 | 24 | | and she guided her family according to the principles of her |
---|
25 | 25 | | faith; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. van Allen was an active member of All Saint's |
---|
27 | 27 | | Episcopal Church, where she served in a number of leadership |
---|
28 | 28 | | positions; she gave generously of her time to the community and |
---|
29 | 29 | | was the first female member and female president of the Exchange |
---|
30 | 30 | | Club of Austin and a driving force in BookSpring's Reach Out and |
---|
31 | 31 | | Read program; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Lanny van Allen was a woman of grace and charm and |
---|
33 | 33 | | was respected and admired throughout the community; she was a |
---|
34 | 34 | | friend and a mentor to many, and she leaves behind memories that |
---|
35 | 35 | | will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in her |
---|
36 | 36 | | life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
39 | 39 | | family of Lanny van Allen; and, be it further |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
41 | 41 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
43 | 43 | | memory of Lanny van Allen. |
