55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Lanny van Allen, who
77 died March 27, 2015, at the age of 79; and
88 WHEREAS, Lanny van Allen was born on March 25, 1936, in
99 Somerset, Kentucky, and she spent her formative years in nearby
1010 Lancaster; she earned a bachelor's degree from Centre College in
1111 Danville, Kentucky, and a master's degree from George Peabody
1212 College in Nashville, Tennessee; in 1991, she earned a doctorate
1313 in curriculum development from The University of Texas; and
1414 WHEREAS, Dedicated to the field of education, Mrs. van
1515 Allen spent 15 years teaching in middle school and high school
1616 classrooms and was recognized for excellence on numerous
1717 occasions; she regularly contributed to professional publications,
1818 and she retired from a distinguished administrative career as
1919 director of programs for English language arts in the Division of
2020 Curriculum and Professional Development at the Texas Education
2121 Agency; and
2222 WHEREAS, She shared 55 years of marriage with Dirk van
2323 Allen; they were blessed with two children and two grandchildren,
2424 and she guided her family according to the principles of her
2525 faith; and
2626 WHEREAS, Mrs. van Allen was an active member of All Saint's
2727 Episcopal Church, where she served in a number of leadership
2828 positions; she gave generously of her time to the community and
2929 was the first female member and female president of the Exchange
3030 Club of Austin and a driving force in BookSpring's Reach Out and
3131 Read program; and
3232 WHEREAS, Lanny van Allen was a woman of grace and charm and
3333 was respected and admired throughout the community; she was a
3434 friend and a mentor to many, and she leaves behind memories that
3535 will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in her
3636 life; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3838 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3939 family of Lanny van Allen; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4141 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4242 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4343 memory of Lanny van Allen.
