5	5	WHEREAS, United States Army Specialist Dane R. Balcon
6	6	served his country with uncommon valor, and his family, friends,
7	7	and fellow Americans suffered an immeasurable loss when he died
8	8	during a mission in Iraq on September 5, 2007, at the age of 19; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Born on April 27, 1988, at Luke Air Force Base in
10	10	Arizona, Dane Balcon hailed from a family with a proud tradition
11	11	of military service, with his father, mother, grandfather, and
12	12	two great-grandfathers having answered their nation's call to
13	13	duty in the armed forces; following his graduation from Sand
14	14	Creek High School, he enlisted in the army in 2007 as a fire
15	15	support specialist and received his training at Fort Sill,
16	16	Oklahoma; and
17	17	WHEREAS, Specialist Balcon's first assignment was to Fort
18	18	Hood as a member of the 3rd Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st
19	19	Cavalry Division; he was deployed to Iraq in July 2007 and
20	20	courageously volunteered for a mission in the city of Balad on
21	21	the day he lost his life; during his brief but distinguished
22	22	career, he earned a number of commendations, including the Bronze
23	23	Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Combat
24	24	Action Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi
25	25	Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; and
26	26	WHEREAS, This admired soldier left behind a devoted family
27	27	that continues to cherish his life and legacy; as a lasting
28	28	tribute to Specialist Balcon, a bill has been introduced to
29	29	dedicate a bridge in his name along State Highway 151 in San
30	30	Antonio, where his mother, Dr. Carla Sizer, and father, John
31	31	Balcon, now reside; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Although eight years have passed since Specialist
33	33	Dane Balcon died in action, time will never diminish the
34	34	sacrifice he made or the spirit of loyalty, bravery, and
35	35	selflessness he demonstrated throughout his life, and his memory
36	36	will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now,
37	37	therefore, be it
38	38	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
39	39	Legislature, hereby pay special tribute to the memory of Army
40	40	Specialist Dane R. Balcon and extend heartfelt sympathy to his
41	41	surviving family members and friends; and, be it further
42	42	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
43	43	prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
44	44	this day, it do so in memory of Specialist Dane Balcon.
