11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 678
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize May of 2015 as Syringomyelia Awareness Month in Texas;
44 and
55 WHEREAS, Syringomyelia is a chronic disorder of the spinal
66 cord that occurs when cerebrospinal fluid enters the interior of
77 the spinal cord and forms a cavity known as a syrinx; and
88 WHEREAS, Approximately 40,000 people in the United States
99 have been diagnosed with Syringomyelia, and many endure chronic
1010 pain from the condition; some patients develop neuropathic pain
1111 syndromes that are difficult to treat; and
1212 WHEREAS, Although the precise cause of the disorder
1313 remains unknown, scientists at research facilities throughout
1414 the nation continue to study the mechanisms that lead to the
1515 formation of syrinxes; and
1616 WHEREAS, The American Syringomyelia and Chiari Alliance
1717 Project is a nonprofit organization that is leading the fight
1818 against Syringomyelia, and as more emphasis is placed on
1919 research, improved treatment techniques are expected to become
2020 available for those suffering from the debilitating condition;
2121 now, therefore, be it
2222 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
2323 Legislature, hereby commend all who are working to learn more
2424 about the causes of Syringomyelia and declare May of 2015 as
2525 Syringomyelia Awareness Month in Texas; and, be it further
2626 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
2727 honor of Syringomyelia Awareness Month.
