5 | 5 | | Three-Dimensional Artist; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The state's highest accolade for excellence in the |
---|
7 | 7 | | arts, designation as a Texas State Artist is conferred on those |
---|
8 | 8 | | individuals who represent the best of our rich and diverse |
---|
9 | 9 | | artistic community and who inspire others through their unique |
---|
10 | 10 | | creative expression; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The 2015 State Poet Laureate is San Antonio native |
---|
12 | 12 | | Carmen Tafolla, a prolific poet, storyteller, performance |
---|
13 | 13 | | artist, and motivational speaker who has earned critical acclaim |
---|
14 | 14 | | for her work; she has published more than 20 books and is one of |
---|
15 | 15 | | the most widely anthologized Latina writers today; chosen as the |
---|
16 | 16 | | first Poet Laureate of the City of San Antonio in 2012, she |
---|
17 | 17 | | visited over 300 schools, universities, professional |
---|
18 | 18 | | conferences, and community arts centers during the course of her |
---|
19 | 19 | | two-year tenure; she has been accorded a host of accolades, which |
---|
20 | 20 | | include the coveted Americas Award presented to her at the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Library of Congress in 2010; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Legendary Austin-based guitarist Jimmie Vaughan |
---|
23 | 23 | | is this year's State Musician; as a founding member of The |
---|
24 | 24 | | Fabulous Thunderbirds, Vaughan helped spark the revival of blues |
---|
25 | 25 | | music on the pop charts with the release of eight albums and the |
---|
26 | 26 | | success of hits like "Tuff Enuff"; he received two Grammy |
---|
27 | 27 | | nominations with the band and later launched a solo career in |
---|
28 | 28 | | 1994, gaining further prominence in the realm of modern roots |
---|
29 | 29 | | music; his masterful playing, defined by vigor, authenticity, |
---|
30 | 30 | | and originality, has earned him the admiration of such icons as |
---|
31 | 31 | | Eric Clapton and B. B. King, and he was cited as the most |
---|
32 | 32 | | formative influence on the career of his younger brother, the |
---|
33 | 33 | | late Stevie Ray Vaughan; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Vincent Valdez has been selected as the 2015 State |
---|
35 | 35 | | Two-Dimensional Artist; he was educated at the renowned Rhode |
---|
36 | 36 | | Island School of Design, and in 2004, a collection of his |
---|
37 | 37 | | charcoal drawings was shown at the McNay Art Museum in San |
---|
38 | 38 | | Antonio, making him the youngest artist, at age 26, to ever have a |
---|
39 | 39 | | solo exhibition there; his work is now widely featured at such |
---|
40 | 40 | | venues as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the |
---|
41 | 41 | | Smithsonian Museum; born and raised in San Antonio, he currently |
---|
42 | 42 | | serves as chair of the Drawing and Painting Department at the |
---|
43 | 43 | | Southwest School of Art; and |
---|
44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, Named the 2015 State Three-Dimensional Artist, |
---|
45 | 45 | | sculptor Margo Sawyer of Elgin studied in England at the Brighton |
---|
46 | 46 | | Polytechnic Faculty of Art and Design and at the Chelsea School |
---|
47 | 47 | | of Art in London, before returning stateside to enroll in the |
---|
48 | 48 | | Yale University sculpture program; through her work, she |
---|
49 | 49 | | explores the concepts of space and transcendence, and she has |
---|
50 | 50 | | recently specialized in creating large-scale installations that |
---|
51 | 51 | | reflect her interest in architecture; she has been exhibited |
---|
52 | 52 | | nationally and internationally, and in addition to pursuing her |
---|
53 | 53 | | artistic vision, she is a professor of sculpture and studio art |
---|
54 | 54 | | at The University of Texas at Austin; and |
---|
55 | 55 | | WHEREAS, The artists who have been selected to hold these |
---|
56 | 56 | | prestigious posts have all greatly contributed to the vibrant |
---|
57 | 57 | | cultural life of the Lone Star State, and Texas is indeed |

58 | 58 | | fortunate to be home to these talented individuals; now, |
---|
59 | 59 | | therefore, be it |

60 | 60 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |

61 | 61 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate the 2015 Texas Commission on |

62 | 62 | | the Arts honorees and extend to them sincere best wishes for |
