11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 679
22 WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on the Arts has announced the
33 2015 appointments for the positions of State Poet Laureate, State
44 Musician, State Two-Dimensional Artist, and State
55 Three-Dimensional Artist; and
66 WHEREAS, The state's highest accolade for excellence in the
77 arts, designation as a Texas State Artist is conferred on those
88 individuals who represent the best of our rich and diverse
99 artistic community and who inspire others through their unique
1010 creative expression; and
1111 WHEREAS, The 2015 State Poet Laureate is San Antonio native
1212 Carmen Tafolla, a prolific poet, storyteller, performance
1313 artist, and motivational speaker who has earned critical acclaim
1414 for her work; she has published more than 20 books and is one of
1515 the most widely anthologized Latina writers today; chosen as the
1616 first Poet Laureate of the City of San Antonio in 2012, she
1717 visited over 300 schools, universities, professional
1818 conferences, and community arts centers during the course of her
1919 two-year tenure; she has been accorded a host of accolades, which
2020 include the coveted Americas Award presented to her at the
2121 Library of Congress in 2010; and
2222 WHEREAS, Legendary Austin-based guitarist Jimmie Vaughan
2323 is this year's State Musician; as a founding member of The
2424 Fabulous Thunderbirds, Vaughan helped spark the revival of blues
2525 music on the pop charts with the release of eight albums and the
2626 success of hits like "Tuff Enuff"; he received two Grammy
2727 nominations with the band and later launched a solo career in
2828 1994, gaining further prominence in the realm of modern roots
2929 music; his masterful playing, defined by vigor, authenticity,
3030 and originality, has earned him the admiration of such icons as
3131 Eric Clapton and B. B. King, and he was cited as the most
3232 formative influence on the career of his younger brother, the
3333 late Stevie Ray Vaughan; and
3434 WHEREAS, Vincent Valdez has been selected as the 2015 State
3535 Two-Dimensional Artist; he was educated at the renowned Rhode
3636 Island School of Design, and in 2004, a collection of his
3737 charcoal drawings was shown at the McNay Art Museum in San
3838 Antonio, making him the youngest artist, at age 26, to ever have a
3939 solo exhibition there; his work is now widely featured at such
4040 venues as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the
4141 Smithsonian Museum; born and raised in San Antonio, he currently
4242 serves as chair of the Drawing and Painting Department at the
4343 Southwest School of Art; and
4444 WHEREAS, Named the 2015 State Three-Dimensional Artist,
4545 sculptor Margo Sawyer of Elgin studied in England at the Brighton
4646 Polytechnic Faculty of Art and Design and at the Chelsea School
4747 of Art in London, before returning stateside to enroll in the
4848 Yale University sculpture program; through her work, she
4949 explores the concepts of space and transcendence, and she has
5050 recently specialized in creating large-scale installations that
5151 reflect her interest in architecture; she has been exhibited
5252 nationally and internationally, and in addition to pursuing her
5353 artistic vision, she is a professor of sculpture and studio art
5454 at The University of Texas at Austin; and
5555 WHEREAS, The artists who have been selected to hold these
5656 prestigious posts have all greatly contributed to the vibrant
5757 cultural life of the Lone Star State, and Texas is indeed
5858 fortunate to be home to these talented individuals; now,
5959 therefore, be it
6060 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
6161 Legislature, hereby congratulate the 2015 Texas Commission on
6262 the Arts honorees and extend to them sincere best wishes for
6363 continued fulfillment in their creative endeavors.
