| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, For more than 50 years, Big Bend Telephone Company |

| 3 | 3 | | of Alpine has provided outstanding telecommunications services |

| 4 | 4 | | to the Big Bend region; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The company pioneered telecommunications |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | throughout the 17,000 square miles of its sparsely populated |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | service area, only 16 percent of which has cellular coverage; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | this area includes 485 miles of the Texas-Mexico border and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | almost 25 percent of the nation's southern border; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Recently, Big Bend Telephone Company provided new |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | infrastructure and services that allowed the opening of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Boquillas Crossing as an unmanned border checkpoint; the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | reopening of this border crossing, which is the only one in the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | 300 miles between Presidio and Del Rio, will contribute to |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | economic development in the area and will be an important boon to |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | tourism; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of this unique and innovative |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | project, BBT was presented with a "Special Recognition: Homeland |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Security" award at the Rural Broadband Association's 2014 Smart |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Rural Community Awards event held at the National Telephone |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Cooperative Association's fall conference in San Francisco; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Big Bend Telephone Company has made a crucial and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | lasting contribution to this state and nation, and it is truly |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | deserving of special commendation; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby commend Big Bend Telephone Company for its |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | outstanding contributions to the community and its commitment to |

| 28 | 28 | | national security and extend to everyone associated with the |
|---|
