2	2	WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on the Arts has announced the
3	3	2016 appointments for the positions of State Poet Laureate, State
4	4	Musician, State Two-Dimensional Artist, and State
5	5	Three-Dimensional Artist; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The state's highest accolade for excellence in the
7	7	arts, designation as a Texas State Artist is conferred on those
8	8	individuals who represent the best of our rich and diverse
9	9	artistic community and who inspire others through their unique
10	10	creative expression; and
11	11	WHEREAS, San Antonio native Laurie Ann Guerrero has been
12	12	named the 2016 State Poet Laureate; while an undergraduate at
13	13	Smith College, she received the prestigious Academy of American
14	14	Poets Prize, and her first full-length collection of poems, A
15	15	Tongue in the Mouth of the Dying, was selected for the 2012 Andrés
16	16	Montoya Poetry Prize and an International Latino Book Award and
17	17	was chosen as one of 14 must-read works of Chicano literature by
18	18	Rigoberto González; she has also been recognized with the
19	19	Panhandler Chapbook Award and with grants from the Artist
20	20	Foundation of San Antonio and the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral
21	21	Foundation, and she was appointed poet laureate of San Antonio by
22	22	Mayor Julian Castro in 2014; her latest book, A Crown for
23	23	Gumecindo, was released by Aztlan Libre Press in April 2015; and
24	24	WHEREAS, The 2016 State Musician is Joe Ely, an Americana
25	25	music pioneer whose songs are infused with a mixture of rock,
26	26	country, blues, and folk influences; over the course of his
27	27	four-decade career, he has performed thousands of shows
28	28	worldwide and has been honored with a Grammy Award, a Country
29	29	Music Association Award, and the Americana Music Association's
30	30	Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance; he has further
31	31	distinguished himself through his collaboration in the country
32	32	supergroup The Flatlanders, which includes fellow songwriters
33	33	Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock; and
34	34	WHEREAS, Dornith Doherty has been selected as the 2016
35	35	State Two-Dimensional Artist; born in Houston, she has produced
36	36	an impressive body of work that has been exhibited and collected
37	37	across the globe, and she is widely known for her examinations of
38	38	the relationship between the natural environment and human
39	39	agency; moreover, she was named a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial
40	40	Foundation Fellow in 2012 and has received grants from the
41	41	Fulbright Program, the Japan Foundation, the Society for
42	42	Contemporary Photography, the Indiana Arts Commission, and the
43	43	United States Department of the Interior; today, she serves as
44	44	the Distinguished Research Professor of Art at the University of
45	45	North Texas; and
46	46	WHEREAS, Named the 2016 State Three-Dimensional Artist,
47	47	Dario Robleto is an Artist Research Fellow at Rice University; he
48	48	uses esoteric materials and processes to create sculptures,
49	49	prints, and installations that investigate unexplored corners of
50	50	history, art, and science; since 1997, his work has been featured
51	51	in more than 30 solo exhibitions, the most recent of which were
52	52	held at the Menil Collection and Inman Gallery in Houston and at
53	53	the Baltimore Museum of Art, and he was awarded the 2011
54	54	Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, the 2009 USA Rasmuson
55	55	Fellowship, and the 2007 Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant; and
56	56	WHEREAS, The artists who have been selected to hold these
57	57	prestigious posts have all greatly contributed to the vibrant
58	58	cultural life of the Lone Star State, and Texas is indeed
59	59	fortunate to be home to these talented individuals; now,
60	60	therefore, be it
61	61	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
62	62	Legislature, hereby congratulate the 2016 Texas Commission on
63	63	the Arts honorees and extend to them sincere best wishes for
64	64	continued fulfillment in their creative endeavors.
