11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 688
22 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate recognizes mental health as a
33 vital part of the overall health and well-being of individuals
44 and families; and
55 WHEREAS, There are many dedicated organizations that work
66 to enrich the lives of individuals in the El Paso community who
77 have a mental illness and to provide assistance and support to
88 their families; these organizations include the National
99 Alliance on Mental Illness-El Paso Affiliate, El Paso Behavioral
1010 Health System, Alternatives Centre for Behavioral Health, Centro
1111 San Vicente, Emergence Health Network, and Paso del Norte Health
1212 Foundation; and
1313 WHEREAS, Eliminating stigma and negative bias associated
1414 with mental illness helps individuals and their families to cope,
1515 seek timely treatment, recover, and maximize their health and
1616 quality of life; and
1717 WHEREAS, All individuals in the El Paso community deserve
1818 to have the knowledge, skill, and opportunity to understand the
1919 facts and recognize the myths surrounding mental illness and to
2020 take timely action to prevent negative health outcomes such as
2121 substance abuse, domestic violence, suicide, incarceration, and
2222 homelessness; and
2323 WHEREAS, Concerned individuals and organizations are
2424 working to develop, through public and private partnerships,
2525 policies that will eliminate disparities, improve community
2626 outreach and engagement, reduce barriers to access, and ensure
2727 culturally and linguistically competent care and support for
2828 diverse communities; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3030 Legislature, hereby recognize May 2015 as National Mental Health
3131 Awareness Month in Texas and commend the people of El Paso County
3232 for their efforts to eliminate stigma and negative bias
3333 associated with mental illness; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
3535 expression of support and esteem from the Texas Senate.
