2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to welcome |

3 | 3 | | the residents of Panola County on the occasion of Panola County |
---|
4 | 4 | | Day at the State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located in northeastern Texas and forming part of |
---|
6 | 6 | | the state's border with Louisiana, Panola County covers more than |
---|
7 | 7 | | 800 square miles of forests and rolling plains and is traversed |
---|
8 | 8 | | by the Sabine River; the area experienced a land rush in the 1830s |
---|
9 | 9 | | as settlers arrived from the southern United States; on March 30, |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1846, the Texas Legislature officially created Panola County, and |
---|
11 | 11 | | two years later, voters chose Carthage as the county seat; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, It is believed that Judge John Allison, a prominent |
---|
13 | 13 | | civic leader, suggested the name Panola, which may be derived |
---|
14 | 14 | | from the Cherokee word for cotton, ponolo; the area's rich soil |
---|
15 | 15 | | was well-suited to the crop, and cotton became the county's main |
---|
16 | 16 | | cash product; today, Panola County enjoys a diversified economy, |
---|
17 | 17 | | primarily based in oil and gas production, agriculture, food |
---|
18 | 18 | | processing, and timber; the lush forests also make the county a |
---|
19 | 19 | | popular destination for hiking, birding, and camping enthusiasts, |
---|
20 | 20 | | while anglers enjoy the good fishing waters of Martin Creek Lake |
---|
21 | 21 | | and Murvaul Lake; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Home to nearly 50 Texas Historical Commission |
---|
23 | 23 | | markers, Panola County was the birthplace of several notable |
---|
24 | 24 | | Texans, including Margie Elizabeth Neal, the first woman elected |
---|
25 | 25 | | to serve in the Texas Senate, and country music stars Tex Ritter |
---|
26 | 26 | | and Jim Reeves; a museum dedicated to Mr. Ritter and a memorial |
---|
27 | 27 | | devoted to Mr. Reeves are located in Carthage, as is the Texas |
---|
28 | 28 | | Country Music Hall of Fame, which honors the legacies of both of |
---|
29 | 29 | | these men, along with other country music legends from the state; |
---|
30 | 30 | | the hall of fame also hosts the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame |
---|
31 | 31 | | Show and John Ritter Tribute Showcase every August; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Carthage, which was named a National Main Street |
---|
33 | 33 | | City in Texas for 2014, is also home to the historic Esquire Theater, |
---|
34 | 34 | | which plays host to the Country Music Hayride every Saturday |
---|
35 | 35 | | night; other popular events taking place in the county seat |
---|
36 | 36 | | include the Piney Woods Quilt Festival in April and the East |
---|
37 | 37 | | Texas Oil and Gas Blast in October, which features live music, a |
---|
38 | 38 | | car show, and arts and crafts; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Panola County have long made an |
---|
40 | 40 | | important contribution to the Lone Star State, and it is most fitting |
---|
41 | 41 | | that they be honored on this special day; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the residents of Panola County on |
---|
44 | 44 | | Panola County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
---|
45 | 45 | | delegation sincere best wishes for a memorable and meaningful |
---|
46 | 46 | | visit to Austin. |
