| 4 | 4 | | wide-ranging contributions to this state and nation made by |

| 5 | 5 | | individuals of Asian and Pacific Islander descent; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a joint |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | resolution of the United States Congress designating a week in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week; the event was |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | expanded 12 years later into a monthlong celebration, and in |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 1992, May was officially designated as Asian-Pacific American |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Heritage Month; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The term Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Micronesia, and Polynesia; when Congress initially set aside |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | time to acknowledge the diverse culture, traditions, and history |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | of people from this region, it selected May in order to |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | commemorate two major developments in the annals of the United |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | States; May 7, 1843, marked the arrival of the first Japanese |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | immigrants, and May 10, 1869, saw the completion of the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | transcontinental railroad, constructed mostly by workers from |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | China; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, generations of Americans |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | descended from Asians and Pacific Islanders have made an |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | indelible imprint on the Lone Star State, and it is indeed a |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | pleasure to join in celebrating the many ways in which they have |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | enriched the vibrant cultural fabric of our nation; now, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby recognize May 2015 as Asian-Pacific American |
