44 Andrew R. Ramirez Sr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Andrew R. Ramirez Sr.,
77 who died April 17, 2015, at the age of 73; and
88 WHEREAS, Andy Ramirez was born in 1942 in East Austin to
99 David and Oralia Ramirez; he served the nation with distinction
1010 as a member of the United States Navy, and he attended The
1111 University of Texas; he went on to organize labor strikes during
1212 the 1960s and to help elect many of Austin's best-known Hispanic
1313 politicians; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Ramirez was at the center of a number of
1515 Austin's social justice initiatives; he was a leader in the
1616 historic Economy Furniture strike, and he was instrumental in the
1717 implementation of President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty
1818 through his service in the governor's office; he later served as
1919 assistant city manager for human development programs, where his
2020 leadership and his ability to bring in millions of dollars in
2121 grants had a profound impact on the delivery of vital public
2222 services; and
2323 WHEREAS, He went on to develop commercial properties and
2424 was a founder of the Avante Corporation, which built corporate
2525 office buildings in San Antonio and Austin; he also established
2626 Rz and Associates, Incorporated, to serve as a business
2727 partnership and consulting firm for new Hispanic enterprises; and
2828 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his work as a community leader, he
2929 founded the Bellas Artes Alliance, an organization dedicated to
3030 promoting Latino arts and culture at the South by Southwest
3131 Festival and throughout the year; and
3232 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and tenacity, he gave
3333 unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his keen intellect, and
3434 his commitment to public service will not be forgotten; and
3535 WHEREAS, He was devoted to his large and loving extended
3636 family, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
3737 forever by all who were privileged to share in his life; now,
3838 therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4040 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4141 family of Andrew R. Ramirez Sr.; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4343 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4444 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4545 memory of Andy Ramirez.
