4	4	Andrew R. Ramirez Sr.
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
6	6	citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Andrew R. Ramirez Sr.,
7	7	who died April 17, 2015, at the age of 73; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Andy Ramirez was born in 1942 in East Austin to
9	9	David and Oralia Ramirez; he served the nation with distinction
10	10	as a member of the United States Navy, and he attended The
11	11	University of Texas; he went on to organize labor strikes during
12	12	the 1960s and to help elect many of Austin's best-known Hispanic
13	13	politicians; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Mr. Ramirez was at the center of a number of
15	15	Austin's social justice initiatives; he was a leader in the
16	16	historic Economy Furniture strike, and he was instrumental in the
17	17	implementation of President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty
18	18	through his service in the governor's office; he later served as
19	19	assistant city manager for human development programs, where his
20	20	leadership and his ability to bring in millions of dollars in
21	21	grants had a profound impact on the delivery of vital public
22	22	services; and
23	23	WHEREAS, He went on to develop commercial properties and
24	24	was a founder of the Avante Corporation, which built corporate
25	25	office buildings in San Antonio and Austin; he also established
26	26	Rz and Associates, Incorporated, to serve as a business
27	27	partnership and consulting firm for new Hispanic enterprises; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Dedicated to his work as a community leader, he
29	29	founded the Bellas Artes Alliance, an organization dedicated to
30	30	promoting Latino arts and culture at the South by Southwest
31	31	Festival and throughout the year; and
32	32	WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and tenacity, he gave
33	33	unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his keen intellect, and
34	34	his commitment to public service will not be forgotten; and
35	35	WHEREAS, He was devoted to his large and loving extended
36	36	family, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
37	37	forever by all who were privileged to share in his life; now,
38	38	therefore, be it
39	39	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
40	40	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
41	41	family of Andrew R. Ramirez Sr.; and, be it further
42	42	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
43	43	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
44	44	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
45	45	memory of Andy Ramirez.
