11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 79
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the citizens of Waco who have come to Austin to
44 celebrate Waco Day at the State Capitol on February 4, 2015; and
55 WHEREAS, Founded in 1849, Waco played a central role in the
66 development of the Lone Star State in the 1800s; it served as a
77 center for cotton farming, as a stopping point for the cowboys on
88 the Chisholm Trail, and as a thriving transportation and
99 marketing hub; by the mid-1900s, it had grown into an important
1010 manufacturing center, and in recent decades, other sectors such
1111 as health care and aerospace have made significant contributions
1212 to the local economy; tourism is also a factor in the region's
1313 prosperity; residents and visitors alike are drawn to
1414 attractions such as the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas
1515 Rangers Hall of Fame and Museum; and
1616 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, institutions of higher
1717 education have been a key element in Waco's success; Baylor
1818 University has been a part of the city since 1887, and Texas State
1919 Technical College and McLennan Community College have further
2020 enhanced the town's reputation as a place of learning and
2121 innovation; and
2222 WHEREAS, During the United States presidency of George W.
2323 Bush, Waco was home to the White House Press Center, which
2424 provided briefing and office facilities for the press corps when
2525 President Bush was at the "Western White House," his ranch in
2626 Crawford, 20 miles west of Waco; and
2727 WHEREAS, A fitting symbol of the City of Waco's
2828 forward-thinking attitude is the new home of the Greater Waco
2929 Chamber of Commerce, which opened in June of 2008 and was
3030 specifically designed to qualify for gold-level certification
3131 from the United States Green Building Council, incorporating a
3232 range of innovative features to create an environmentally
3333 sensitive landmark that serves as a model for additional
3434 sustainable construction projects; and
3535 WHEREAS, Area residents take great pleasure in the city's
3636 high quality of life and the scenic surroundings of Lake Waco,
3737 and they continue to make vital contributions to the Lone Star
3838 State as they look forward to a promising future; now, therefore,
3939 be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4141 Legislature, hereby recognize February 4, 2015, as Waco Day at
4242 the State Capitol and extend to those who have come to celebrate
4343 this day a warm welcome and best wishes for a memorable and
4444 productive visit to Austin; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
4646 memento of this special day.
