5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of noted musician and |
---|
7 | 7 | | restaurateur Moses Steve Vasquez, who died August 13, 2014, at |
---|
8 | 8 | | the age of 90; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Moses Vasquez was born September 2, 1923, in |
---|
10 | 10 | | Austin, where he attended public schools; he was married to his |
---|
11 | 11 | | beloved wife, the late Carmen Villasana, for 60 years; they |
---|
12 | 12 | | raised five children together and were blessed with numerous |
---|
13 | 13 | | grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Vasquez and his wife established the original |
---|
15 | 15 | | Tamale House on Congress Avenue in 1959, financing it with the |
---|
16 | 16 | | proceeds he had earned touring as a vocalist and drummer with |
---|
17 | 17 | | Beto Villa, who was known as the Polka King; the business, which |
---|
18 | 18 | | sold what many considered to be the best tamales in Austin, |
---|
19 | 19 | | thrived until 1984, when he sold the small lot it occupied to make |
---|
20 | 20 | | way for downtown development; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Vasquez continued to pursue a thriving career |
---|
22 | 22 | | as a musician while operating the Tamale House and several night |
---|
23 | 23 | | clubs; in addition to his work with Beto Villa, he appeared with |
---|
24 | 24 | | such eminent acts as Juan Coronado, Ruben Ramos and the Mexican |
---|
25 | 25 | | Revolution, and Shorty and the Corvettes; he was a regular |
---|
26 | 26 | | performer at the famed Broken Spoke, where he sang country and |
---|
27 | 27 | | western music; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Vasquez was honored with a 2006 Alma Award for |
---|
29 | 29 | | a lifetime of musical achievement; he was known for his willingness |
---|
30 | 30 | | to support up-and-coming bands and for hosting at his clubs a |
---|
31 | 31 | | series of concerts that featured Tejano superstar Selena; |
---|
32 | 32 | | through his determination and passion he played a vital role in |
---|
33 | 33 | | the growth and popularity of Mexican country music; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he |
---|
35 | 35 | | gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his generous spirit, |
---|
36 | 36 | | and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be |
---|
37 | 37 | | forgotten; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and |
---|
39 | 39 | | grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
---|
40 | 40 | | forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
43 | 43 | | family of Moses Steve Vasquez; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
45 | 45 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
46 | 46 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
47 | 47 | | memory of Moses Vasquez. |
