55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of noted musician and
77 restaurateur Moses Steve Vasquez, who died August 13, 2014, at
88 the age of 90; and
99 WHEREAS, Moses Vasquez was born September 2, 1923, in
1010 Austin, where he attended public schools; he was married to his
1111 beloved wife, the late Carmen Villasana, for 60 years; they
1212 raised five children together and were blessed with numerous
1313 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Vasquez and his wife established the original
1515 Tamale House on Congress Avenue in 1959, financing it with the
1616 proceeds he had earned touring as a vocalist and drummer with
1717 Beto Villa, who was known as the Polka King; the business, which
1818 sold what many considered to be the best tamales in Austin,
1919 thrived until 1984, when he sold the small lot it occupied to make
2020 way for downtown development; and
2121 WHEREAS, Mr. Vasquez continued to pursue a thriving career
2222 as a musician while operating the Tamale House and several night
2323 clubs; in addition to his work with Beto Villa, he appeared with
2424 such eminent acts as Juan Coronado, Ruben Ramos and the Mexican
2525 Revolution, and Shorty and the Corvettes; he was a regular
2626 performer at the famed Broken Spoke, where he sang country and
2727 western music; and
2828 WHEREAS, Mr. Vasquez was honored with a 2006 Alma Award for
2929 a lifetime of musical achievement; he was known for his willingness
3030 to support up-and-coming bands and for hosting at his clubs a
3131 series of concerts that featured Tejano superstar Selena;
3232 through his determination and passion he played a vital role in
3333 the growth and popularity of Mexican country music; and
3434 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he
3535 gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his generous spirit,
3636 and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
3737 forgotten; and
3838 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
3939 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
4040 forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4242 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4343 family of Moses Steve Vasquez; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4545 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4646 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4747 memory of Moses Vasquez.
