11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 810
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize noted attorney and activist Jim Harrington, who is
44 retiring from the Texas Civil Rights Project after 25 years of
55 outstanding leadership; and
66 WHEREAS, Mr. Harrington earned his law degree from the
77 University of Detroit in 1973; he spent 10 years as a director of
88 the South Texas Project, and during his tenure, he helped
99 safeguard the rights of farmworkers and indigent citizens in the
1010 Rio Grande Valley and litigated cases of discrimination and
1111 police brutality; and
1212 WHEREAS, Mr. Harrington founded the Texas Civil Rights
1313 Project in 1990; the organization uses litigation, education,
1414 and social services to secure racial, social, and economic
1515 justice for those least able to defend themselves; and
1616 WHEREAS, Under Mr. Harrington's exceptional leadership,
1717 the Texas Civil Rights Project has succeeded in making
1818 substantial systemic gains in justice for Texans of limited means
1919 in the areas of voting rights, police and border patrol
2020 misconduct, sex discrimination, employment bias, privacy, and
2121 grand jury discrimination; and
2222 WHEREAS, Jim Harrington has been a steadfast defender of
2323 the civil rights and liberties of Texans, and it is truly fitting
2424 that he receive special recognition for his many contributions to
2525 the administration of justice in our state; now, therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
2727 Legislature, hereby commend Jim Harrington on his invaluable
2828 stewardship of the Texas Civil Rights Project and extend to him
2929 best wishes for continued success in all his endeavors; and, be
3030 it further
3131 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3232 him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
