55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Dr. Donald Wood Patrick, who died April
77 25, 2015, at the age of 76; and
88 WHEREAS, Donald Patrick was born in San Antonio on August
99 28, 1938, along with his twin brother, David; Donald graduated
1010 from Texas A&I University, and he earned a medical degree from
1111 Baylor College of Medicine; and
1212 WHEREAS, He served with distinction as chief of
1313 neurosurgery at the 24th evacuation hospital in Vietnam, and he
1414 received a Bronze Star for his exceptional service; and
1515 WHEREAS, After his military service, he practiced
1616 neurosurgery in Austin for more than 30 years; during that time,
1717 he served as chief of staff and as chief of surgery at hospitals
1818 across the area; and
1919 WHEREAS, Dr. Patrick was instrumental in establishing the
2020 city's Emergency Medical Services program, and he served several
2121 times as its director; he was executive director of the Texas
2222 Medical Board from 2001 through 2008 and served as president of
2323 the Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons; and
2424 WHEREAS, A man of many talents and interests, he raised
2525 quarter horses, built and piloted his own airplane, ran marathons
2626 and climbed mountains, played the violin, and traveled
2727 extensively; he placed great importance on lifelong learning,
2828 andheenteredTheUniversityofTexasSchoolofLawattheageof
2929 55 and later attended the Butler School of Music as a graduate
3030 student; he was an avid supporter of the Austin Symphony
3131 Orchestra; and
3232 WHEREAS, Donald Patrick was beloved by many; a kind and
3333 gracious man, he was noted for his brilliant intellect, his
3434 strong principles and his warm sense of humor, and he will long be
3535 remembered by those who were privileged to share in his life; and
3636 WHEREAS, He was devoted to his beloved wife of 26 years,
3737 Carolyn Biebas, and to his children and grandchildren, and he
3838 leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
3939 family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4141 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4242 family of Dr. Donald Wood Patrick; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4545 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4646 memory of Dr. Donald Wood Patrick.
