| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Selected as the public service honoree, |

| 6 | 6 | | Ms. Berriozábal has been a powerful voice for change in San |

| 7 | 7 | | Antonio throughout her work as a social and political activist; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the daughter of immigrant parents, she became the first Mexican |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | American woman elected to the city council in 1981, and over the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | course of her decade-long tenure, she was unafraid to stand alone |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | on the issues in which she believed; she went on to narrowly lose |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | her bid for mayor in 1991 but has remained active in civic |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | affairs; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Berriozábal helped establish Hispanas |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Unidas, a nonprofit group dedicated to the education and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | advancement of minority women, and she has participated in the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | founding of various other Latina organizations; in 1994, she |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | received a presidential appointment to be the United States |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | representative to the Inter-American Commission of Women, held |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | by the Organization of American States; she has further |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | represented her country at conferences hosted by the United |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Nations and at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | 1995; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed advocate has additionally served as |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | an instructor on women, minorities, and public policy at Harvard |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | University after accepting a fellowship at the Institute of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Politics at the university's John F. Kennedy School of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Government; today, she continues to ardently support social |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | justice, peace, and environmental causes, and she enjoys serving |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | as a mentor to younger activists; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, The city of San Antonio is indeed fortunate to |

| 32 | 32 | | have passionate and engaged residents like Maria Berriozábal, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | whose history of community involvement is an inspiration to all |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | who know her; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
