5 | 5 | | Gala, taking place in San Antonio on May 21; and |

6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Born in Mercedes in 1955, Sister Gutierrez was a |
---|
7 | 7 | | student at The University of Texas--Pan American when she heard |
---|
8 | 8 | | Mother Teresa speak during a trip to the Alamo City; she was moved |
---|
9 | 9 | | to devote herself to the religious life, and in 1979, she took her |
---|
10 | 10 | | vows in San Antonio as a sister of the Missionary Catechists of |
---|
11 | 11 | | Divine Providence; later, she completed her master's degree in |
---|
12 | 12 | | theology with a minor in philosophy at Our Lady of the Lake |
---|
13 | 13 | | University, the institution founded by her order; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Sister Gutierrez served as director of a youth |
---|
15 | 15 | | ministry in Fresno, California, before returning to San Antonio |
---|
16 | 16 | | to work at Saint Peter-Saint Joseph Children's Home; |
---|
17 | 17 | | subsequently, she directed a youth ministry in Austin and served |
---|
18 | 18 | | in a youth ministry in Washington, D.C.; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In the early 1990s, Sister Gutierrez took a |
---|
20 | 20 | | sabbatical in New Hampshire to reflect on her spiritual path; she |
---|
21 | 21 | | had the opportunity to learn from noted psychiatrist Elisabeth |
---|
22 | 22 | | Kübler-Ross, the author of On Death and Dying, and the experience |
---|
23 | 23 | | inspired her to become a hospital chaplain in order to help |
---|
24 | 24 | | people at the end of their lives or in medical crisis; after |
---|
25 | 25 | | serving in California, Maryland, and New Mexico, she returned to |
---|
26 | 26 | | Texas and counseled patients in the Houston area, most recently |
---|
27 | 27 | | at St. Luke's The Woodlands Hospital; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Sister Gutierrez had been successfully treated |
---|
29 | 29 | | for renal cancer in 1997, but in October 2014, the disease was |
---|
30 | 30 | | found to have recurred and metastasized; rather than undergo |
---|
31 | 31 | | chemotherapy, she chose to dedicate her remaining time to her |
---|
32 | 32 | | important work; she had such great concern for others that when |
---|
33 | 33 | | nurses stopped in to care for her, she urged them to move on to |
---|
34 | 34 | | those who might need them more; she passed away in San Antonio on |
---|
35 | 35 | | December 23, 2014, at the age of 59; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, A woman of deep altruism, Sister Norma Gutierrez |
---|
37 | 37 | | expressed her faith by offering solace and hope, bringing light |
---|
38 | 38 | | to people in their darkest hours, and her selflessness is an |
---|
39 | 39 | | enduring source of inspiration to all; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Sister Norma |
---|
42 | 42 | | Gutierrez on the occasion of her posthumous recognition as an |
---|
43 | 43 | | Unsung Hero by the Westside Development Corporation; and, be |
---|
44 | 44 | | it further |

45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
