11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 815
22 WHEREAS, Sister Norma Gutierrez is being recognized
33 posthumously as an Unsung Hero by the Westside Development
44 Corporation at its 2015 Westside Honors Exitos en Nuestro Barrio
55 Gala, taking place in San Antonio on May 21; and
66 WHEREAS, Born in Mercedes in 1955, Sister Gutierrez was a
77 student at The University of Texas--Pan American when she heard
88 Mother Teresa speak during a trip to the Alamo City; she was moved
99 to devote herself to the religious life, and in 1979, she took her
1010 vows in San Antonio as a sister of the Missionary Catechists of
1111 Divine Providence; later, she completed her master's degree in
1212 theology with a minor in philosophy at Our Lady of the Lake
1313 University, the institution founded by her order; and
1414 WHEREAS, Sister Gutierrez served as director of a youth
1515 ministry in Fresno, California, before returning to San Antonio
1616 to work at Saint Peter-Saint Joseph Children's Home;
1717 subsequently, she directed a youth ministry in Austin and served
1818 in a youth ministry in Washington, D.C.; and
1919 WHEREAS, In the early 1990s, Sister Gutierrez took a
2020 sabbatical in New Hampshire to reflect on her spiritual path; she
2121 had the opportunity to learn from noted psychiatrist Elisabeth
2222 Kübler-Ross, the author of On Death and Dying, and the experience
2323 inspired her to become a hospital chaplain in order to help
2424 people at the end of their lives or in medical crisis; after
2525 serving in California, Maryland, and New Mexico, she returned to
2626 Texas and counseled patients in the Houston area, most recently
2727 at St. Luke's The Woodlands Hospital; and
2828 WHEREAS, Sister Gutierrez had been successfully treated
2929 for renal cancer in 1997, but in October 2014, the disease was
3030 found to have recurred and metastasized; rather than undergo
3131 chemotherapy, she chose to dedicate her remaining time to her
3232 important work; she had such great concern for others that when
3333 nurses stopped in to care for her, she urged them to move on to
3434 those who might need them more; she passed away in San Antonio on
3535 December 23, 2014, at the age of 59; and
3636 WHEREAS, A woman of deep altruism, Sister Norma Gutierrez
3737 expressed her faith by offering solace and hope, bringing light
3838 to people in their darkest hours, and her selflessness is an
3939 enduring source of inspiration to all; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4141 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Sister Norma
4242 Gutierrez on the occasion of her posthumous recognition as an
4343 Unsung Hero by the Westside Development Corporation; and, be
4444 it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4646 prepared for the family of Sister Gutierrez as an expression of
4747 high regard from the Texas Senate.
